Lent is a penitential season of forty days preparing the Church for Easter through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The canonical title, Dominica 2 in Quadragesima, simply names this as the second Sunday in the Lenten period. Its rank, “Greater Sunday of the I Class,” means this day is among the principal celebrations of the liturgical year: the Sunday Mass has primary liturgical importance, and its prayers, readings, and rites are central for communal worship. There is no octave or vigil attached specifically to this Sunday in the given context; it is observed as the regular Sunday of the second week of Lent.

The Catechism reveals the profound significance of the title "Lord," which designates both God the Father and Jesus Christ as divine. Rooted in the use of "Lord" for the divine name YHWH, this title expresses Jesus’ divine sovereignty, which he demonstrated through works of power over nature, illness, demons, death, and sin. Those who approached Jesus for help and healing addressed him as "Lord" with respect and trust; in the risen Christ, this confession becomes adoration, love, and affection: "My Lord and my God!" In Christian prayer, the title "Lord" is a familiar expression of trust and hope. Confessing Jesus as Lord recognizes his divinity and reminds each person not to submit personal freedom absolutely to any earthly power, but to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the Greek translation of the Old Testament, the ineffable Hebrew name YHWH, by which God revealed himself to Moses, is rendered as Kyrios, "Lord". From then on, "Lord" becomes the more usual name by which to indicate the divinity of Israel's God. the New Testament uses this full sense of the title "Lord" both for the Father and - what is new - for Jesus, who is thereby recognized as God Himself.

Jesus ascribes this title to himself in a veiled way when he disputes with the Pharisees about the meaning of Psalm 110, but also in an explicit way when he addresses his apostles. Throughout his public life, he demonstrated his divine sovereignty by works of power over nature, illnesses, demons, death and sin.
