First-class feast

Eastertide is the fifty-day season from Easter Sunday to Pentecost, a time when the Church celebrates the risen Christ and the life he brings. The Solemnity of St. Joseph, here titled “Solemnitas S. Joseph Sponsi B. M. V.,” honors Joseph as the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a model of faithful service. Its rank, given as “Double of the I Class” in the older Divino Afflatu system, indicates the celebration is among the highest-ranking feasts of the liturgical year: it takes liturgical precedence, with its proper prayers and readings used at Mass and the Divine Office, and it may suppress lesser observances that would otherwise occur that day. In this canonical context there is no octave or vigil attached beyond what the liturgical books prescribe, so the focus is the solemn observance itself.

The Beatitudes

Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.
This Beatitude applies the promise of persecution personally to those insulted, opposed, or falsely accused because of Christ. Their joy rests not in the pain itself but in union with Christ and the promised reward that earthly hostility cannot take away.

Twelfth Pope of the Catholic Church

Died: 0175-00-00 · Rome

Pope Soter was the bishop of Rome from c. 167 to his death in c. 174. According to the Annuario Pontificio, the dates may have ranged from 162–168 to 170–177. He was born in Fundi, in the Lazio region of Italy. Soter is known for declaring that marriage was valid only as a sacrament blessed by a priest and also for formally inaugurating Easter as an annual festival in Rome. His name, from Greek Σωτήριος from σωτήρ "saviour", would be his baptismal name, as his lifetime predates the tradition of adopting papal names.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

In the Catechism, we learn that Jesus’ Resurrection is unlike the return to ordinary earthly life experienced by those he raised before Easter. In his risen body, he passes from death to a new life beyond time and space. His body still bears the marks of his Passion, showing that it is truly the same body that was crucified, yet it also has the new properties of a glorious body and is filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. The Resurrection is a real event, witnessed through the empty tomb and the apostles’ encounters with the risen Christ, while still remaining a mystery that transcends history and human senses. Jesus revealed himself to his disciples in ways meant to awaken their faith. As a family, we can prayerfully contemplate Christ’s suffering, death, and risen glory, trusting in the Father’s power revealed in raising his Son.

The Catechism teaches that death is not the end: our souls go to meet God while awaiting reunion with our glorified bodies. At the last day, God will raise all the dead through the power of Jesus’ Resurrection—those who have done good to the resurrection of life and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. Although the manner of this resurrection exceeds our understanding, the Eucharist already gives us a foretaste of Christ’s transformation of our bodies. Through Baptism and the Holy Spirit, believers already participate in Christ’s death and Resurrection, and, nourished by the Eucharist, belong to his Body. As families, we can honor our own bodies and every other person, especially those who suffer, with the dignity that comes from belonging to Christ, living in hope for the day when we will appear with him in glory.

In reflecting on death through the lens of faith, we see it as both a natural part of life and a consequence of sin, but also as a gateway to eternal life with Christ. The Catechism teaches that while death marks the end of our earthly journey, it is through our union with Jesus—who transformed death by his own sacrifice—that we can find hope and meaning in our mortality. For Catholic families, this understanding invites us to embrace life’s urgency, fostering a desire to live fully in Christ’s grace, knowing that our earthly departure brings us closer to the ultimate reunion with God. By viewing death not as a final defeat but as a passage to glory, we are encouraged to cultivate a spirit of obedience and love, preparing ourselves and our loved ones for the promise of resurrection.
