Eastertide is the fifty-day season from Easter Sunday to Pentecost, a time when the Church celebrates the Resurrection and the growth of the new life Christ won for us. There is no octave or vigil noted here, so this observance takes its place within the ongoing joy of Eastertide without additional preparatory or eight-day extensions. St. Peter Canisius is honored as a confessor (one who lived a holy life of witness without martyrdom) and as a Doctor of the Church (a title given to saints whose teaching has been especially important for Catholics).

Peter Canisius was a Dutch Jesuit priest known for his strong support for the Catholic faith during the Protestant Reformation in Germany, Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, Switzerland and the British Isles. The restoration of the Catholic Church in Germany is largely attributed to the work there of the Jesuits, which Canisius led. He is venerated in the Catholic Church as a saint and as a Doctor of the Church.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

In Catholic teaching, those who die in God’s grace and friendship but are still imperfectly purified undergo a final purification called Purgatory, so that they may attain the holiness needed to enter the joy of heaven (CCC 1030-1031). The Church’s teaching is joined to her longstanding practice of honoring the dead and praying for them, especially through the Eucharistic sacrifice; she also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance offered on their behalf (CCC 1032). Conversely, to die in mortal sin without repentance and acceptance of God’s merciful love is to remain separated from God forever by one’s own free choice; this definitive self-exclusion is called hell (CCC 1033, 1035). Jesus’ warnings about hell call us to use our freedom responsibly and to turn again to God in conversion (CCC 1034-1036). God predestines no one to hell, and the Church continually implores God’s mercy, praying that all may come to repentance (CCC 1037). As we reflect together, we can remember the dead in prayer and ask for the grace to choose love, repentance, and friendship with God.

The resurrection of the dead, both the just and the unjust, will precede the Last Judgment. When Christ returns in glory, he will reveal the truth of each person’s relationship with God and the good each person has done or failed to do in earthly life. This judgment will show that God’s justice triumphs over every injustice and that his love is stronger than death. For our daily lives, this teaching calls us to conversion while God gives us the day of salvation, inspires holy fear of God, and encourages us to seek the justice of his Kingdom. We can await Christ’s return with blessed hope, trusting that he will be glorified in his saints and marvelled at by those who believe.
