Major feast

Octave Day of Corpus Christi falls in the Time After Pentecost and is the closing day of the octave that celebrates the Most Holy Body of Christ (Corpus Christi). In the older liturgical system, an "octave" is an eight-day extension of a major feast so the central mystery is kept in the community's prayer more fully. The rank "Greater Double" indicates this is a significant liturgical celebration with solemn prayers, readings, and antiphons reserved for important feasts; in plain language, it means the day is celebrated with greater solemnity than ordinary weekday observances. As the octave day, this day repeats or continues the themes of the principal feast — thanksgiving for the Eucharist, reverence for Christ’s real presence, and communal participation in sacramental life.

Barnabas, born Joseph (Ἰωσήφ) or Joses (Ἰωσής), was according to tradition an early Christian, one of the prominent Christian disciples in Jerusalem. According to Acts 4:36, Barnabas was a Cypriot Levite. Identified as an apostle in Acts 14:14, he and Paul the Apostle undertook missionary journeys together and defended Gentile converts against the Judaizers. They traveled together making more converts, and participated in the Council of Jerusalem. Barnabas and Paul successfully evangelized among the "God-fearing" Gentiles who attended synagogues in various Hellenized cities of Anatolia.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

In the Eucharist, the whole Church is united with the offering and intercession of Christ. The Pope is associated with every celebration as the sign and servant of the unity of the universal Church, and the local bishop’s name is mentioned as a sign of his presidency over the particular Church. The Church offers the Eucharistic sacrifice in communion with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, standing as it were at the foot of the cross with Mary, united to Christ’s offering and intercession. The sacrifice is also offered for the faithful departed who died in Christ but are not yet wholly purified, that they may enter into the light and peace of Christ. As a family, we can receive these words with gratitude, praying in communion with the whole Church, the saints, and the faithful departed.

The Catechism teaches that Christ is present to his Church in many ways: in his word, in the Church’s prayer, where believers gather in his name, in the poor and suffering, in the sacraments, in the sacrifice of the Mass, and in the minister. He is present most especially in the Eucharistic species. In the Eucharist, the whole Christ—body, blood, soul, and divinity—is truly, really, and substantially present under the species of bread and wine. By the consecration, the whole substance of the bread is changed into Christ’s body and the whole substance of the wine into his blood, a change the Church calls transubstantiation. Christ’s Eucharistic presence begins at consecration and remains as long as the Eucharistic species subsist; he is wholly present in each species and in every part of them. For family prayer and reflection, these teachings can help us wonder at Christ’s many ways of being near to his Church, especially in the Eucharist, the perfection of spiritual life and the end toward which all the sacraments tend.

Baptism is a profound sacrament that symbolizes both death and purification, as well as regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit. Through Baptism, original sin, personal sins, and all punishment for sin are forgiven, so that nothing remains to impede entry into the Kingdom of God. The baptized become new creatures: adopted children of God, members of Christ, coheirs with him, and temples of the Holy Spirit. Yet suffering, illness, death, human weakness, and the inclination to sin remain, calling us to resist sin courageously through the grace of Jesus Christ. For families reflecting on Baptism, this is a hopeful reminder that Christian life is rooted in the grace received there: faith, hope, love, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and growth in goodness through the moral virtues.
