Our Lady of the Snows

In the Catechism, Mary is honored as the “Mother of God,” because the one she conceived by the Holy Spirit and bore as her Son is the Father’s eternal Son. Jesus’ conception in the womb of the Virgin Mary was the work of the Holy Spirit, without human seed, and it proclaims that the Son of God came in a humanity like our own. The Gospels present this virginal conception as a divine work beyond human possibility and as the fulfillment of God’s promise through Isaiah that a virgin would conceive and bear a son. Although this mystery has met opposition and incomprehension, its meaning is received in faith within the whole mystery of Christ, from his Incarnation to his Passover. The Church also confesses Mary’s real and perpetual virginity, celebrating her as the Ever-virgin. Jesus is her only son, yet her spiritual motherhood extends to the faithful, in whose generation and formation she cooperates with a mother’s love. These truths offer families a prayerful opportunity to contemplate Christ’s coming among us and Mary’s maternal care for the faithful.

The Catechism teaches that while human freedom is a gift from God, it is often misused, leading to sin and alienation from Him and one another (CCC 1739-1740). True freedom is not the license to act without restraint but is found in living according to God's moral law, which nurtures our dignity and relationships (CCC 1741-1742). Through Christ’s sacrifice, we are liberated from sin, and the Holy Spirit guides us toward genuine freedom and spiritual growth (CCC 1743-1744). Families can reflect on these teachings by fostering an environment where freedom is exercised responsibly, promoting love and charity, and encouraging each member to seek God’s truth and grace in their daily lives (CCC 1745-1748).
