First-class feast

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls in Ordinary Time after Pentecost, a season that focuses on the life and mission of the Church in the world. In calendar terms this feast celebrates Mary’s being taken—body and soul—into heavenly glory at the close of her earthly life. Its rank, “Double of the I Class,” marks it as one of the Church’s principal solemnities: it takes liturgical precedence over regular feasts and calls for fuller celebration in prayer, the Mass, and the Divine Office. This celebration matters because it honors the destiny to which all Christians are called—the resurrection and glorification in Christ—and highlights Mary’s unique role in salvation history as Mother of the Lord and model of hope and faith for the family.

The Theological Virtues

Faith
Faith is the infused virtue by which the mind firmly assents to the truths God has revealed because He can neither deceive nor be deceived. It rests on God’s authority and gives the foundation by which the believer knows Him and orders life toward Him.
Hope
Hope is the infused virtue by which a person confidently expects eternal life and the graces needed to reach it, relying on God’s goodness, promises, and power. It stands between despair, which distrusts mercy, and presumption, which expects heaven without conversion and grace.
Charity
Charity is the infused virtue by which God is loved above all things for His own sake and one’s neighbor is loved for God. It gives supernatural life to the other virtues by directing the whole person toward friendship with God and eternal union with Him.

The Assumption of Mary is one of the four Marian dogmas of the Catholic Church. Pope Pius XII defined it on 1 November 1950 in his apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus as the assumption of Mary, body and soul, into heaven.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

In the Catechism, Mary is honored as the “Mother of God,” because the one she conceived by the Holy Spirit and bore as her Son is the Father’s eternal Son. Jesus’ conception in the womb of the Virgin Mary was the work of the Holy Spirit, without human seed, and it proclaims that the Son of God came in a humanity like our own. The Gospels present this virginal conception as a divine work beyond human possibility and as the fulfillment of God’s promise through Isaiah that a virgin would conceive and bear a son. Although this mystery has met opposition and incomprehension, its meaning is received in faith within the whole mystery of Christ, from his Incarnation to his Passover. The Church also confesses Mary’s real and perpetual virginity, celebrating her as the Ever-virgin. Jesus is her only son, yet her spiritual motherhood extends to the faithful, in whose generation and formation she cooperates with a mother’s love. These truths offer families a prayerful opportunity to contemplate Christ’s coming among us and Mary’s maternal care for the faithful.

In the Catechism, hope is presented as a theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness. It teaches us to trust Christ’s promises and rely not on our own strength, but on the grace of the Holy Spirit. Hope takes up our desire for happiness, orders our hopes toward heaven, keeps us from discouragement, and leads us away from selfishness toward the happiness that flows from charity. Rooted in Abraham’s hope and unfolded in Jesus’ proclamation of the Beatitudes, hope is a sure and steadfast anchor through life’s trials. It gives joy in tribulation, is nourished by prayer—especially the Our Father—and helps us persevere, by God’s grace, in doing his will as we await the joy and glory of heaven.

Charity, as the highest theological virtue, calls us to love God above all and our neighbors as ourselves, reflecting the profound love Jesus has for us. This love, emphasized by Christ as the new commandment, invites us to imitate His self-giving love, extending even to those we might consider enemies. In practicing charity, we fulfill God’s commandments and experience true spiritual freedom, moving from fear to a loving relationship with God. For families, embracing charity cultivates joy, peace, and a spirit of generosity, reminding us that love is the ultimate goal of our lives and actions, drawing us closer to God and one another.
