The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Wisdom
Wisdom is the gift by which the Holy Ghost gives a spiritual relish for divine things and orders the whole life toward God’s glory. It judges created goods in the light of the highest cause, seeing them according to their relation to God.
Understanding
Understanding is the gift by which the Holy Ghost gives deeper penetration into the meaning of revealed truth. It does not create new revelation, but enables the mind to grasp more clearly the mysteries already received by faith.
Counsel
Counsel is the gift by which the Holy Ghost guides practical judgment amid difficulty, danger, or uncertainty. It perfects prudence by making the soul ready to recognize and follow divine guidance when human reasoning alone is insufficient.
Fortitude
Fortitude is the gift by which the Holy Ghost strengthens the will to do God’s will and endure whatever fidelity requires. It carries the firmness of the virtue of fortitude to a higher readiness under divine prompting, even in extraordinary trials.
Knowledge
Knowledge is the gift by which created things are judged rightly in relation to God and His will. It reveals both the goodness of creation and its inability to satisfy the soul apart from the Creator.
Piety
Piety is the gift by which the Holy Ghost produces filial affection toward God as Father and a loving reverence for what belongs to Him. From this spirit flow willing worship, obedience, and a family-like charity toward God’s children.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

In the Catechism, we see that Mary’s virginity and motherhood have a profound place in God’s saving plan. Her virginity reveals God’s absolute initiative in the Incarnation: Jesus is conceived by the Holy Spirit, has God as his Father, and is truly the Son of God made man. As the New Adam, Christ inaugurates the new creation and gives the Holy Spirit and grace to redeemed humanity. Mary’s faith, free obedience, and undivided gift of herself to God’s will enabled her to become the mother of the Saviour. At once virgin and mother, she is also the symbol and most perfect realization of the Church, which receives God’s word in faith and brings forth children to new and immortal life through preaching and Baptism. In our prayer, we can thank God for Mary’s faithful yes and ask for the grace to receive his word with faith.

God’s love invites each person to respond freely, for he has given us the freedom and capacity to know and love him. He has placed within us a longing for truth and goodness that only he can satisfy, and his promise of eternal life answers this desire beyond all hope. In our life of faith, grace is first the gift of the Holy Spirit, who justifies and sanctifies us. Grace also equips us to share in God’s work, to serve the salvation of others, and to help the Church grow. The Spirit’s special gifts, or charisms, are meant for the common good and for the charity that builds up the Church. Although grace is beyond our experience and known by faith, we can reflect on God’s blessings in our lives and in the lives of the saints, growing in faith and trustful poverty.

In the Catholic understanding, "merit" reflects the rewards or punishments due to one’s actions, grounded in justice. However, when it comes to our relationship with God, we must acknowledge our profound inequality; all we have comes from Him. Our merits in the Christian life arise not from our own efforts alone, but from God's grace, which enables us to act in accordance with His will. This grace empowers us to perform good works that are truly meritorious, as they are gifts from God, allowing us to participate in His divine nature and become co-heirs with Christ. For Catholic families, this means recognizing the importance of grace in their lives, fostering a spirit of gratitude and collaboration with God through prayer and charitable actions, knowing that all good things come from His love and generosity.
