The rank “Semidouble” is an older liturgical classification indicating a celebration of notable importance but not of the highest solemnity. In plain language: expect special prayers and readings for the saint’s feast without the extended liturgical observances (like octaves) attached to major solemnities. There is no octave or vigil specified here, so preparation is typically through morning and evening prayer and the Mass of the day.

Presumption, Despair, and Hope

Sins Against the Theological Virtues

Presumption on God’s mercy
Presumption expects salvation or forgiveness without the repentance, grace, and cooperation God requires. It distorts hope by treating divine mercy as permission to remain in sin or by trusting one’s own power to reach heaven without God’s help.
Despair of God’s mercy
Despair is the deliberate loss of hope in God’s mercy or in the possibility of salvation. It falsely judges sin, weakness, or suffering to be greater than God’s power and goodness and therefore tempts the soul to stop seeking forgiveness and grace.

The Theological Virtues

Hope
Hope is the infused virtue by which a person confidently expects eternal life and the graces needed to reach it, relying on God’s goodness, promises, and power. It stands between despair, which distrusts mercy, and presumption, which expects heaven without conversion and grace.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Tenth Commandment calls us to examine the intentions of our hearts, rejecting covetousness, greed, and envy, which can lead to injustice and harm toward our neighbor. Although the desire for pleasant things is good in itself, we must guard against desires that exceed reason and seek what belongs to another. We may rightly seek to obtain what others have when we do so by just means. In our daily lives, we can resist envy by practicing good will, humility, and charity. Law and grace turn our hearts from avarice and envy toward the Sovereign Good: God, who satisfies the human heart and leads us by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus calls his disciples to prefer him above everything and everyone, renouncing what they have for his sake and the Gospel, as the poor widow of Jerusalem showed by giving all she had to live on (CCC 2544). Detachment from riches is necessary for entering the Kingdom of heaven, and we are called to direct our affections rightly so that worldly things and attachment to riches do not hinder perfect charity (CCC 2544-2545). The Beatitudes proclaim the happiness, grace, beauty, and peace of the poor in spirit, whose Kingdom already belongs to them. Trusting in the Father’s providence frees us from anxiety about tomorrow and prepares us for the blessedness of the poor, who shall see God (CCC 2546-2547). As we seek God’s promises, we can ask for the grace to resist attachment to riches, pleasure, and power; to combat envy with good-will, humility, and abandonment to God’s providence; and to keep our hearts fixed on the true treasure of seeing God (CCC 2548-2557).
