Second-class feast

St. Stephen the First Martyr is celebrated within Christmastide, the liturgical season that follows Christmas and honors the early days of the Incarnation and the newborn Church. His feast falls in the first week of Christmastide and remembers Stephen as the Church’s protomartyr — the first to give his life witnessing to Christ. The rank “Double of the II Class” indicates an important liturgical celebration: in plain terms, it is a principal feast with extended prayers, antiphons, and duties in the Divine Office and Mass, but it is not on the same level as a major solemnity. In the Divino Afflatu calendar system this feast is observed as a fixed day within the octave atmosphere of Christmastide rather than as a moveable observance.

Oppression of the poor
Oppression of the poor uses power, wealth, or social advantage to burden people who are already vulnerable or unable to defend their rights. Their cry reaches God because He is their protector and judges the powerful for injustice toward the weak, the stranger, the widow, and the orphan.

The Corporal Works of Mercy

Feed the hungry
Feeding the hungry supplies necessary nourishment to those who lack it. It is a corporal work because it serves a bodily need, and an act of mercy because charity responds to another’s misery rather than ignoring preventable want.
Give drink to the thirsty
Giving drink to the thirsty provides the water or other wholesome refreshment needed for life and health. The work includes direct aid and reasonable support for efforts that make safe water available to people in need.
Shelter the homeless
Sheltering the homeless provides safe lodging or helps secure it for those without a stable place to live. Traditional language calls this harboring the harborless, extending hospitality and protection to the stranger and displaced person.

Stephen is traditionally venerated as the protomartyr or first martyr of Christianity. According to the Acts of the Apostles, he was a deacon in the early church at Jerusalem who angered members of various synagogues by his teachings. Accused of blasphemy at his trial, he made a speech denouncing the Jewish authorities who were sitting in judgment on him and was then stoned to death. Saul of Tarsus, a Pharisee and Roman citizen who would later become an apostle, participated in Stephen's execution.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

In the Incarnation, Christ assumed a complete human nature, including a rational human soul and a human body, without ceasing to be the divine Son of God. Everything he is and does in his humanity belongs to the one divine person of the Son. Jesus possessed true human knowledge, lived within the conditions of space and time, grew in wisdom, and learned through experience. Yet his human knowledge, united to the Word incarnate, also expressed the divine life of his person: he knew the Father intimately, could discern human hearts, and possessed fullness of understanding of the eternal plans he came to reveal. As we reflect together, we can marvel at Christ’s true humanity and his divine identity.

In the Catechism, the petition "Give us this day our daily bread" emphasizes the deep trust we, as God's children, should have in our Heavenly Father, who provides for all our needs—both material and spiritual. This request acknowledges our relationship with God and our solidarity with others, calling us to care for those who suffer from hunger or lack of resources. As families, we are reminded to balance prayer with action, recognizing that while we work diligently, all we receive is ultimately a gift from God, meant to be shared generously. This prayer also points us to the more profound hunger for God's Word, urging us to seek spiritual nourishment through the Eucharist and to proclaim the good news to those in need, as we anticipate the fullness of God's kingdom in our lives.

In the Lord’s Prayer, the petition for forgiveness, “as we forgive those who trespass against us,” teaches that our request for God’s mercy is joined to our willingness to forgive others. Though we continue to sin and turn away from God, we can return to him with confidence, confessing both our need and his mercy. Unforgiveness closes our hearts to the Father’s merciful love, while confessing our sins opens us to his grace. This forgiveness is more than a moral duty: through the Holy Spirit, wounded hearts can be transformed, injuries can become compassion, and hurt can become intercession. As we pray together, we can ask for hearts attuned to God’s compassion, ready to forgive from the heart. Forgiveness is a high point of Christian prayer and a fundamental condition of reconciliation with God and with one another.
