The Epiphany season celebrates the revelation of Christ to the world, traditionally focusing on the Magi’s visit, Christ’s baptism, and his first signs. Day 3 within the Octave of the Epiphany (Dies 3 infra Octavam Epiphaniae) falls inside the eight-day extension of the feast, allowing families to continue reflecting on this mystery of God made manifest. Counsel, Command, and Consent

Ways of Being Accessory to Another’s Sin

By counsel
A person becomes accessory by counsel when advice, planning, or persuasion helps another choose a sinful act. Responsibility depends on knowing the act is wrong and on the real influence the counsel has in bringing it about.
By command
A person becomes accessory by command when authority is used to order another person to do wrong. The superior bears responsibility for directing the act, while the subordinate remains bound not to obey a command contrary to God’s law.
By consent
A person becomes accessory by consent when approval is knowingly given to another’s sinful plan or action, especially when that approval is needed for it to proceed. Consent can be expressed in words, decisions, votes, or any deliberate authorization.

Counsel the doubtful
Counseling the doubtful helps a person whose judgment is uncertain to recognize a sound and morally lawful course. Good counsel applies truth prudently to the actual difficulty and does not replace conscience with another person’s preferences.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

According to the Catechism, every person is by nature and vocation religious, made to live in communion with God. We live most fully when we freely live our bond with him, and true happiness is found in being completely united with God. By listening to the message of creation and to the voice of conscience, we can come to certainty that God exists as the cause and end of all things. The Church teaches that the one true God, our Creator and Lord, can be known from his works through human reason. We can speak of God through the perfections we see in creation, while humbly recognizing that our limited words cannot exhaust his mystery. Believers are also urged by Christ’s love to bring the light of the living God to those who do not know him or who reject him.

These paragraphs teach us that we can know God with certainty from his works through natural reason, but God also freely reveals himself in a way we could never reach by our own powers. His loving plan, fulfilled in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, opens the way to the Father and makes us able to know and love God beyond our natural capacity. God reveals himself gradually through deeds and words, preparing humanity for the incarnate Word, Jesus Christ. Even after the first sin, God did not abandon the human family: he promised salvation, continued his care for humanity, and made the covenant with Noah as part of his saving plan for the nations. As we reflect together, we can hold fast to the hope that God seeks to draw people to himself and gives eternal life to those who seek salvation by patience in well-doing.

Man is by nature and vocation a religious being. Coming from God, going toward God, man lives a fully human life only if he freely lives by his bond with God.
