Catechism of the Catholic Church
The resurrection of the dead, both the just and the unjust, will precede the Last Judgment. When Christ returns in glory, he will reveal the truth of each person’s relationship with God and the good each person has done or failed to do in earthly life. This judgment will show that God’s justice triumphs over every injustice and that his love is stronger than death. For our daily lives, this teaching calls us to conversion while God gives us the day of salvation, inspires holy fear of God, and encourages us to seek the justice of his Kingdom. We can await Christ’s return with blessed hope, trusting that he will be glorified in his saints and marvelled at by those who believe.
At the end of time, the Kingdom of God will come in its fullness. After the universal judgment, the righteous will reign forever with Christ, glorified in body and soul, and the universe itself will be renewed. This “new heavens and a new earth” will fulfill God’s plan to bring all things together in Christ. God will dwell among his people, and there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain. United with Christ, the redeemed will share lasting happiness, peace, and communion with God and one another. As we await this fulfillment, the hope of a new earth should not lessen our concern for this world, but spur us to work for the better ordering of human society. Our earthly efforts, offered according to the Lord’s command and in his Spirit, point toward the eternal kingdom Christ will present to the Father.

The resurrection of all the dead, "of both the just and the unjust," will precede the Last Judgment. This will be "the hour when all who are in the tombs will hear [the Son of man's] voice and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment." Then Christ will come "in his glory, and all the angels with him .... Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.... and they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
