Simple feast

This day falls in the Time After Pentecost, the long season after Pentecost when the Church focuses on the life of the Church, the growth of Christian virtue, and following Christ in daily life. The Spiritual Works of Mercy

Admonish the sinner
Admonishing the sinner is a charitable warning intended to help a person recognize and leave serious wrongdoing. It requires truth, prudence, and concern for the person’s salvation, not humiliation, anger, or a desire to display superiority.
Instruct the ignorant
Instructing the ignorant means teaching needed truth to someone who does not know it, especially truth concerning faith and moral duty. The work presumes patience and accuracy and differs from winning an argument or displaying knowledge.
Counsel the doubtful
Counseling the doubtful helps a person whose judgment is uncertain to recognize a sound and morally lawful course. Good counsel applies truth prudently to the actual difficulty and does not replace conscience with another person’s preferences.
Comfort the sorrowful
Comforting the sorrowful shares another person’s burden through truthful consolation, patient presence, and appropriate help. Christian comfort neither dismisses grief nor offers false assurances, but strengthens hope in God amid real suffering.
Bear wrongs patiently
Bearing wrongs patiently means enduring injuries that cannot prudently be corrected without yielding to hatred or revenge. It does not require enabling abuse or refusing lawful protection; patience governs the heart while justice addresses the wrong.

Saint Giles, also known as Giles the Hermit, was a hermit or monk active in the lower Rhône most likely in the 7th century. Revered as a saint, his cult became widely diffused but his hagiography is mostly legendary. A town that bears his name grew up around the monastery he purportedly founded, which became a pilgrimage centre and a stop on the Way of Saint James.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

Solidarity is a Christian virtue and a direct demand of human and Christian brotherhood. It calls us to share material goods and, even more, the spiritual goods of the faith. In daily life, we can remember that every person is “another self,” deserving respect for the dignity and fundamental rights shared by all. Our differences are part of God’s plan and should lead us to charity and a recognition that we need one another. By seeking a more just social order, reducing excessive inequalities, and practicing solidarity among people of every social and economic background, we serve social justice and contribute to peace. As the Lord teaches, we seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.

The Catechism teaches that humanity, called to beatitude but wounded by sin, needs salvation from God. Divine help comes through Christ, through the law that guides us and the grace that sustains us. Rooted in divine Wisdom, the moral law is God’s fatherly instruction: it shows the paths that lead to promised beatitude and warns against evil that turns us from God and his love. The natural law, established by reason and present in every human heart, expresses human dignity and provides universal precepts for moral life, including respect for others as equals. Though its application requires reflection amid differing times, places, and circumstances, it remains permanent and provides a foundation for personal moral choices, human community, and civil law. Because sin can obscure our knowledge of moral and religious truth, we need grace and revelation to know these truths with firmness and clarity.

The equal dignity of human persons requires the effort to reduce excessive social and economic inequalities. It gives urgency to the elimination of sinful inequalities.
