St. Wenceslaus, Duke and Martyr, is celebrated in the Time after Pentecost, the long season of the Church year when we reflect on the growth and witness of the Christian life after Christ’s sending of the Holy Spirit. Pride is an inordinate esteem of oneself or one’s own excellence that resists dependence on God and right order toward others. It may appear as vanity and superiority, but also as a self-absorbed preoccupation with one’s misery that refuses humble trust in God.

Humility
Humility is the truthful recognition that every good comes from God and that personal gifts, limits, and duties must be seen as they really are. It avoids both self-exaltation and false self-contempt, placing confidence in God rather than in an invented image of oneself.

Wenceslaus I, Wenceslas I or Václav the Good was the Prince (kníže) of Bohemia from 921 until his death, probably in 935. According to the legend, he was assassinated by his younger brother, Boleslaus the Cruel.

This name holds eternal significance, reminding us that each person is cherished by God and called to live out their unique dignity. Families can encourage a deep respect for names, both their own and others’, recognizing them as icons of the person’s value. By beginning each day and prayer with the Sign of the Cross, families can dedicate their actions to God, reminding themselves of the holiness of His name and the importance of living truthfully and reverently.

A person commits perjury when he makes a promise under oath with no intention of keeping it, or when after promising on oath he does not keep it. Perjury is a grave lack of respect for the Lord of all speech. Pledging oneself by oath to commit an evil deed is contrary to the holiness of the divine name.
