The Catechism teaches that deep inequalities in resources and economic capability divide nations. Solidarity among politically interdependent nations is necessary, and wealthier nations have a grave moral responsibility in solidarity, charity, and sometimes justice toward nations unable to secure the means of their own development (CCC 2437-2439). Direct aid rightly responds to urgent needs such as catastrophes and epidemics, but lasting progress also requires more equitable international economic and financial relationships and support for poorer countries striving for growth and liberation (CCC 2440). Full human development is rooted in an increased sense of God and self-awareness; it serves the person and freedom, reduces poverty and exploitation, and fosters respect for cultural identities and openness to God (CCC 2441). In our family prayer and daily life, we can remember these needs before God and encourage the lay faithful’s vocation to work with fellow citizens for the common good, bringing Gospel values to social life as witnesses and agents of peace and justice (CCC 2442).

The Catechism emphasizes that God blesses those who come to the aid of the poor and rebukes those who turn away, calling us to respond generously to those in need. Care for the poor belongs to the Church’s constant tradition and is inspired by the Gospel, the poverty of Jesus, and his concern for the poor. In our daily lives, we can practice spiritual and corporal works of mercy: offering counsel and comfort, forgiving patiently, feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and giving alms. Love for the poor includes concern for material, cultural, and religious poverty, while justice calls us first to meet what is due to others. As we grow in generosity and justice, we learn to recognize Christ’s presence in the poor and to serve him in our neighbors.
