It occurs in the season called Christmastide, a liturgical period focused on the mystery of the Incarnation — God becoming man — and the joy of salvation that begins with the newborn Redeemer. In plain language, the rank “Double of the I Class” indicates this is one of the Church’s highest-ranking celebrations: its prayers, readings, and liturgical ceremonies take precedence over most other observances and shape the worship of the whole community on this day. Oppression of the poor
Oppression of the poor uses power, wealth, or social advantage to burden people who are already vulnerable or unable to defend their rights. Their cry reaches God because He is their protector and judges the powerful for injustice toward the weak, the stranger, the widow, and the orphan.

The Corporal Works of Mercy

Feed the hungry
Feeding the hungry supplies necessary nourishment to those who lack it. It is a corporal work because it serves a bodily need, and an act of mercy because charity responds to another’s misery rather than ignoring preventable want.
Give drink to the thirsty
Giving drink to the thirsty provides the water or other wholesome refreshment needed for life and health. The work includes direct aid and reasonable support for efforts that make safe water available to people in need.
Shelter the homeless
Sheltering the homeless provides safe lodging or helps secure it for those without a stable place to live. Traditional language calls this harboring the harborless, extending hospitality and protection to the stranger and displaced person.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Catechism highlights the profound mystery of the Incarnation: Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man, not a mixture of the divine and human. Without ceasing to be God, the Son of God became man and our brother. The early Church defended and clarified this faith against errors that denied or confused Christ’s true divinity, true humanity, or his one divine person. The councils also proclaimed that Mary is truly the Mother of God, because the Son of God was conceived in her womb and born from her according to the flesh. For Catholic families, these truths invite us to wonder at Jesus Christ, who became man for our salvation and remains one of the Holy Trinity.

In these passages, the Catechism reflects on the Kingdom of God, which was brought near in the Word incarnate, has come through Christ’s death and Resurrection, and is present in the Eucharist. When we pray, “Thy kingdom come,” we look toward Christ’s return while also being committed to God’s work in the world today. With the help of the Holy Spirit, Christians are called to seek the Kingdom’s growth through righteousness, peace, and joy, and to use their God-given gifts to serve justice and peace. Jesus perfectly fulfilled the Father’s will, and in prayer we ask to be united to him so that we may discern and do God’s will. As we pray together, we can ask for the grace to love one another as Christ loves us and for God’s saving plan to be fulfilled on earth as it is in heaven.

In the Catechism, the petition "Give us this day our daily bread" emphasizes the deep trust we, as God's children, should have in our Heavenly Father, who provides for all our needs—both material and spiritual. This request acknowledges our relationship with God and our solidarity with others, calling us to care for those who suffer from hunger or lack of resources. As families, we are reminded to balance prayer with action, recognizing that while we work diligently, all we receive is ultimately a gift from God, meant to be shared generously. This prayer also points us to the more profound hunger for God's Word, urging us to seek spiritual nourishment through the Eucharist and to proclaim the good news to those in need, as we anticipate the fullness of God's kingdom in our lives.
