Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In the Catechism, we learn that Mary was uniquely prepared by God to be the Mother of the Savior, enriched with grace from her conception to fulfill her divine role. Celebrated as "full of grace," she was redeemed in an extraordinary way through the merits of Christ, remaining free from sin throughout her life. At the Annunciation, Mary exemplified perfect obedience and faith, accepting God's will with the words, "Let it be done to me according to your word." For Catholic families, Mary's example inspires us to embrace God's call with trust and surrender, reminding us of the importance of grace and obedience in our own lives.

In the journey of faith, no Christian seeks holiness alone: in Christ, each of God’s children is joined to all other Christians in the unity of the Mystical Body. The communion of saints unites the faithful in heaven, those being purified, and pilgrims on earth in a lasting bond of charity and an abundant exchange of spiritual goods. The Church’s treasury is not material wealth, but the inexhaustible value of Christ’s merits, together with the prayers and good works of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints. Through the Church’s ministry, indulgences draw on this treasury for the remission of temporal punishment due to sin and encourage works of devotion, penance, and charity; they may also be obtained for the faithful departed who are being purified. The sacrament of Penance is a liturgical and ecclesial action in which Christ personally forgives, heals, raises up, and restores sinners to communion. Individual, integral confession and absolution are the ordinary way the faithful are reconciled with God and the Church.

In the Catholic tradition, the sacrament of Penance—also called conversion, confession, or reconciliation—is the sacrament through which forgiveness of sins committed after Baptism is conferred. Jesus gave his apostles the Holy Spirit and the authority to forgive or retain sins. Through God’s merciful grace, those who have lost communion with God through sin can return to him. This sacrament includes repentance, confession of sins to a priest, the intention to make reparation, and the priest’s absolution. Its spiritual fruits include reconciliation with God and the Church, peace and serenity of conscience, spiritual consolation, and increased strength for the Christian battle. As we reflect together, we can ask God for the gift of conversion for ourselves and for others, trusting in his mercy and seeking to live more faithfully as disciples of Christ.
