Saint Pantaleon, counted in Western Christianity as among the Fourteen Holy Helpers of the Late Middle Ages, and in Eastern Christianity as one of the Holy Unmercenary Healers, was a martyr of Nicomedia in Bithynia during the Diocletianic Persecution of 305 AD.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

Sacramentals are sacred signs instituted by the Church that prepare us to receive the fruit of the sacraments and sanctify different circumstances of life. They include blessings of persons, meals, objects, and places, through which the Church praises God and prays for his gifts, usually invoking the name of Jesus with the sign of the cross. Sacramentals do not confer grace as the sacraments do, but the Church’s prayer disposes us to receive grace and cooperate with it. Alongside the liturgy, Christians are also nourished by popular devotions, which can enrich Christian life when they harmonize with the liturgy and lead us toward it. In daily prayer, may we welcome these sacred signs as helps that direct ordinary moments toward the praise of God and the sanctification of life.

The Catechism teaches that the sacraments, particularly those of Christian initiation, lead us toward the ultimate fulfillment of life in God's Kingdom, where we anticipate the resurrection and eternal life. In the light of Christ’s Paschal mystery, death for a Christian is transformed into a passage to be "at home with the Lord," marking the completion of the new life begun at Baptism. The Church, as a nurturing mother, accompanies the deceased through the funeral rites, which express hope in eternal life and the community's bond with the departed. Families are encouraged to participate in these rites, reflecting on their loved one's journey and the promise of resurrection, thus fostering a deeper understanding of faith and communion in the Body of Christ during times of loss.

Besides sacramental liturgy and sacramentals, catechesis must take into account the forms of piety and popular devotions among the faithful. the religious sense of the Christian people has always found expression in various forms of piety surrounding the Church's sacramental life, such as the veneration of relics, visits to sanctuaries, pilgrimages, processions, the stations of the cross, religious dances, the rosary, medals, etc.
