St. Joseph of Cupertino Confessor is celebrated in Ordinary Time (Time after Pentecost), a season focused on the growth of the Christian life and the day-to-day witness of the saints. The rank “Double” indicates a liturgical celebration of real importance: it means the day’s prayers and readings take precedence over ordinary weekday observances and that the community gives special attention to the saint in the Mass and the Divine Office. The Evangelical Counsels

Chastity
The evangelical counsel of chastity is the voluntary renunciation of marriage for the sake of Christ and undivided service to His kingdom. It goes beyond the chastity required of every Christian and, when vowed in religious life, offers the whole person to God.
Poverty
The evangelical counsel of poverty is the voluntary surrender or restricted use of personal possessions in order to follow Christ with greater freedom. It goes beyond ordinary justice and detachment by making material goods subject to a stable form of Gospel renunciation.
Obedience
The evangelical counsel of obedience is the voluntary offering of one’s will to God through lawful religious authority and an approved rule. St. Thomas calls it the chief religious vow because it offers not merely possessions or bodily goods, but the direction of one’s own will.

Joseph of Cupertino (Copertino), OFM Conv. (Italian: Giuseppe da Copertino; 17 June 1603 – 18 September 1663) was an Italian Conventual Franciscan friar who is honored as a Christian mystic and saint. According to traditional Franciscan accounts, he was "remarkably unclever", but experienced miraculous levitation and ecstatic visions throughout his life which made him the object of scorn. He applied to the Conventual Franciscan friars, but was rejected due to his lack of education. He then pleaded with them to serve in their stables. After several years of working there, he had impressed the friars so much with the devotion and simplicity of his life that he was admitted to their Order, destined to become a Catholic priest, in 1625.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Ten Commandments express God’s covenant with his people and remain permanently valid, as Jesus attested by his life and preaching. Jesus teaches that those who abide in him bear fruit, and he tells those who would enter life to keep the commandments. The commandments form an organic unity, express the natural law in a privileged way, and state grave obligations, even though obedience also includes matters that may be light in themselves. As we read them together, we can remember with hope that what God commands, he makes possible by his grace.

The first commandment calls us to love the one true God with all our heart, soul, and mind, to accept him, worship him, and remember his loving and liberating action. It invites us to respond to God’s love through faith, hope, and charity: believing his word, hoping for his help and blessing, and loving him above all things. In our daily devotion, we are called to nourish and protect our faith with prudence and vigilance, rejecting doubt, unbelief, despair, presumption, indifference, ingratitude, lukewarmness, and spiritual sloth. As we seek to obey God’s commandments and bear witness to him, we act in conformity with the image and likeness of God and make him manifest through lives shaped by his goodness and love.
