Avarice or Greed
Avarice is an excessive desire to possess or retain wealth and material goods. It makes possessions an end rather than a means, producing hardness toward those in need and tempting the soul toward dishonesty, anxiety, and neglect of spiritual goods.

The Way of Light

Generosity
Generosity readily uses possessions, time, ability, and attention for the good of others and the honor of God. It opposes avarice by keeping created goods in their proper role as means of service rather than objects that possess the heart.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

The celebration of the Lord’s Day and the Eucharist is at the heart of the Church’s life, with Sunday observed as the foremost holy day of obligation. From the earliest apostolic age, Christians have gathered together to encourage one another in faith. The parish gathers the faithful for the Sunday Eucharist, teaches Christ’s saving doctrine, and practices the Lord’s charity through good works and brotherly love. The faithful are bound to participate in Mass on Sundays and other holy days of obligation, unless they are excused for a serious reason or dispensed by their pastor. In the Sunday Eucharist, we witness to our belonging to Christ and his Church, grow in faith and charity, and strengthen one another.

The Catechism emphasizes the importance of Sunday as a day of rest and worship, reflecting God's creation rhythm of work and leisure (CCC 2184). Families are called to honor this day by refraining from activities that distract from worship and the joy of the Lord’s Day, while still attending to legitimate needs (CCC 2185). Christians are encouraged to use Sunday for acts of mercy, spending quality time with loved ones, and nurturing their spiritual lives through reflection and prayer (CCC 2186-2190). It is vital for families to support one another in sanctifying this day, avoiding unnecessary demands on others, and advocating for recognition of Sundays as a sacred time for all (CCC 2187-2195).
