Some years have more Sundays between Pentecost and Advent than the ordinary sequence of Sundays after Pentecost supplies. The calendar therefore resumes the unused Sixth Sunday after Epiphany in November, using its original prayers and readings while remaining in Time after Pentecost; it does not begin a second Epiphany season. This arrangement lets the Twenty-Fourth and Last Sunday after Pentecost remain immediately before Advent.

Sins Against the Theological Virtues

Resisting or attacking the known truth
Resisting known truth means opposing a truth recognized as coming from God because accepting it would require conversion or surrender. The sin lies not in honest difficulty or inquiry, but in a willful refusal of light already understood.
Envy at another’s spiritual good
Envy of another’s spiritual good is sadness or resentment at the grace, virtue, holiness, or service of God found in someone else. It is especially contrary to charity because it grieves over the very good by which God is honored and souls are helped.

The Theological Virtues

Faith
Faith is the infused virtue by which the mind firmly assents to the truths God has revealed because He can neither deceive nor be deceived. It rests on God’s authority and gives the foundation by which the believer knows Him and orders life toward Him.
Charity
Charity is the infused virtue by which God is loved above all things for His own sake and one’s neighbor is loved for God. It gives supernatural life to the other virtues by directing the whole person toward friendship with God and eternal union with Him.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

Jesus calls his disciples to prefer him above everything and everyone, renouncing what they have for his sake and the Gospel, as the poor widow of Jerusalem showed by giving all she had to live on (CCC 2544). Detachment from riches is necessary for entering the Kingdom of heaven, and we are called to direct our affections rightly so that worldly things and attachment to riches do not hinder perfect charity (CCC 2544-2545). The Beatitudes proclaim the happiness, grace, beauty, and peace of the poor in spirit, whose Kingdom already belongs to them. Trusting in the Father’s providence frees us from anxiety about tomorrow and prepares us for the blessedness of the poor, who shall see God (CCC 2546-2547). As we seek God’s promises, we can ask for the grace to resist attachment to riches, pleasure, and power; to combat envy with good-will, humility, and abandonment to God’s providence; and to keep our hearts fixed on the true treasure of seeing God (CCC 2548-2557).

Prayer is a great mystery that draws us into a living relationship with God. It begins in humility, as we acknowledge our need for God and receive prayer as his gift. Prayer is not merely a matter of words or gestures; the whole person prays, and true prayer comes from the heart, our hidden center of decision and encounter with God. In prayer, Christ meets our thirst with God’s own desire for us, and our petitions become a response of faith and love. As we pray, we live the covenant relationship God gives us in Christ, through the Holy Spirit, directed to the Father. Through Baptism, we are united with Christ, and prayer helps us remain in the presence of the Holy Trinity and in communion with him.
