Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: But deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried: he descended into hell; the third day he arose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven; sitteth at the right hand of God the Father almighty: from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Thereafter, with hearable voice, the Versicle is said:
℣. O Lord, + open thou my lips.
℟. And my mouth shall declare thy praise.
    ℣. O God, ✠ come to my assistance;
℟. O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
    Alleluia.
  2. Invitatory

    Invitatory {Antiphon from the Common or Feast}
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
  3. Hymn

    Hymn {from the Common or Feast}
The martyrs' triumphs let us sing,
Their blood poured forth for Christ the King,
And while due hymns of praise we pay,
Our thankful hearts cast grief away.

    The world its terrors urged in vain;
    They recked not of the body's pain;
One step, and holy death made sure
The life that ever shall endure.

    To flames the martyr saints are hailed;
    By teeth of savage beasts assailed;
Against them, armed with ruthless brand
And hooks of steel, their torturers stand.

The mangled frame is tortured sore,
    The holy life-drops freshly pour;
They stand unmoved amidst the strife,
    By grace of everlasting life.

Redeemer, hear us of thy love,
That, with the martyr host above,
    Hereafter, of thine endless grace,
thy servants also may have place.
    Amen.
  4. Psalms with lections

    Psalms with lections {Antiphons from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
    Nocturn I
Ant. The Lord set up a testimony in Jacob:
    Psalm 77(1-8) [1]
77:1 Attend, O my people, to my law: * incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
77:2 I will open my mouth in parables: * I will utter propositions from the beginning.
77:3 How great things have we heard and known, * and our fathers have told us.
77:4 They have not been hidden from their children, * in another generation.
77:4 Declaring the praises of the Lord, and his powers, * and his wonders which he hath done.
77:5 And he set up a testimony in Jacob: * and made a law in Israel.
77:5 How great things he commanded our fathers, that they should make the same known to their children: * that another generation might know them.
77:6 The children that should be born and should rise up, * and declare them to their children.
77:7 That they may put their hope in God and may not forget the works of God: * and may seek his commandments.
77:8 That they may not become like their fathers, * a perverse and exasperating generation.
77:8 A generation that set not their heart aright: * and whose spirit was not faithful to God.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. The Lord set up a testimony in Jacob: and made a law in Israel.
  5. Psalm 77(9-16)

Ant. The Lord did wonderful things.
    Psalm 77(9-16) [2]
77:9 The sons of Ephraim who bend and shoot with the bow: * they have turned back in the day of battle.
77:10 They kept not the covenant of God: * and in his law they would not walk.
77:11 And they forgot his benefits, * and his wonders that he had shewn them.
77:12 Wonderful things did he do in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, * in the field of Tanis.
77:13 He divided the sea and brought them through: * and he made the waters to stand as in a vessel.
77:14 And he conducted them with a cloud by day: * and all the night with a light of fire.
77:15 He struck the rock in the wilderness: * and gave them to drink, as out of the great deep.
77:16 He brought forth water out of the rock: * and made streams run down as rivers.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

  6. Psalm 77(17-31)

    Ant. The Lord opened.
    Psalm 77(17-31) [3]
77:17 And they added yet more sin against him: * they provoked the most High to wrath in the place without water.
77:18 And they tempted God in their hearts, * by asking meat for their desires.
77:19 And they spoke ill of God: * they said: Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
77:20 Because he struck the rock, and the waters gushed out, * and the streams overflowed.
77:20 Can he also give bread, * or provide a table for his people?
77:21 Therefore the Lord heard, and was angry: * and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and wrath came up against Israel.
77:22 Because they believed not in God: * and trusted not in his salvation.
77:23 And he had commanded the clouds from above, * and had opened the doors of heaven.
77:24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, * and had given them the bread of heaven.
77:25 Man ate the bread of angels: * he sent them provisions in abundance.
77:26 He removed the south wind from heaven: * and by his power brought in the southwest wind.
77:27 And he rained upon them flesh as dust: * and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea.
77:28 And they fell in the midst of their camp, * round about their pavilions.
77:29 So they did eat, and were filled exceedingly, and he gave them their desire: * they were not defrauded of that which they craved.
77:30 As yet their meat was in their mouth: * and the wrath of God came upon them.
77:31 And he slew the fat ones amongst them, * and brought down the chosen men of Israel.

    Reading 1
Lesson from the second letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians
    2 Cor 12:1-4
1 If I must glory (it is not expedient indeed): but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
2 I know a man in Christ above fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I know not, or out of the body, I know not; God knoweth), such a one caught up to the third heaven.
3 And I know such a man (whether in the body, or out of the body, I know not: God knoweth):
4 That he was caught up into paradise, and heard secret words, which it is not granted to man to utter.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify thy Name for evermore.
    * For great is thy mercy, O Lord, toward me.
℣. Thou art my God, and I will praise thee; Thou art my God, and I will exalt thee.
℟. For great is thy mercy, O Lord, toward me.
  10. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Son, the Sole-begotten, mercifully bless and keep us.
    ℟. Amen.

    Reading 2
    2 Cor 12:5-9
5 For such an one I will glory; but for myself I will glory nothing, but in my infirmities.
6 For though I should have a mind to glory, I shall not be foolish; for I will say the truth. But I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth in me, or any thing he heareth from me.
7 And lest the greatness of the revelations should exalt me, there was given me a sting of my flesh, an angel of Satan, to buffet me.
8 For which thing thrice I besought the Lord, that it might depart from me.
9 And he said to me: My grace is sufficient for thee; for power is made perfect in infirmity.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Great, O Lord, is thy mercy toward me.
    * And Thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.
℣. In the day of my trouble I called upon thee, for Thou hast heard me.
℟. And Thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.
  11. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the grace of the Holy Spirit enlighten all our hearts and minds.
    ℟. Amen.

    Reading 3
    2 Cor 12:9-11
9 Gladly therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
10 For which cause I please myself in my infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ. For when I am weak, then am I powerful.
11 I am become foolish: you have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you: for I have no way come short of them that are above measure apostles, although I be nothing.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Lord is my refuge.
    * And my God is the stay of my trust.
℣. He delivered me from the strongest of mine enemies, and the Lord was my stay.
℟. And my God is the stay of my trust.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. And my God is the stay of my trust.
  12. Nocturn II

    Nocturn II
    Ant. God is their helper.
    Psalm 77(32-41) [4]
77:32 In all these things they sinned still: * and they believed not for his wondrous works.
77:33 And their days were consumed in vanity, * and their years in haste.
77:34 When he slew them, then they sought him: * and they returned, and came to him early in the morning.
77:35 And they remembered that God was their helper: * and the most high God their redeemer.
77:36 And they loved him with their mouth: * and with their tongue they lied unto him:
77:37 But their heart was not right with him: * nor were they counted faithful in his covenant.
77:38 But he is merciful, and will forgive their sins: * and will not destroy them.
77:38 And many a time did he turn away his anger: * and did not kindle all his wrath.
77:39 And he remembered that they are flesh: * a wind that goeth and returneth not.
77:40 How often did they provoke him in the desert: * and move him to wrath in the place without water?
77:41 And they turned back and tempted God: * and grieved the holy one of Israel.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. God is their helper, and the most high God their redeemer.
  13. Psalm 77(42-58)

    Ant. The Lord redeemed them.
    Psalm 77(42-58) [5]
77:42 They remembered not his hand, * in the day that he redeemed them from the hand of him that afflicted them:
77:43 How he wrought his signs in Egypt, * and his wonders in the field of Tanis.
77:44 And he turned their rivers into blood, * and their showers that they might not drink.
77:45 He sent amongst them diverse sorts of flies, which devoured them: * and frogs which destroyed them.
77:46 And he gave up their fruits to the blast, * and their labours to the locust.
77:47 And he destroyed their vineyards with hail, * and their mulberry trees with hoarfrost.
77:48 And he gave up their cattle to the hail, * and their stock to the fire.
77:49 And he sent upon them the wrath of his indignation: * indignation and wrath and trouble, which he sent by evil angels.
77:50 He made a way for a path to his anger: * he spared not their souls from death, and their cattle he shut up in death.
77:51 And he killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt: * the firstfruits of all their labour in the tabernacles of Cham.
77:52 And he took away his own people as sheep: * and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
77:53 And he brought them out in hope, and they feared not: * and the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
77:54 And he brought them into the mountain of his sanctuary: * the mountain which his right hand had purchased.
77:54 And he cast out the Gentiles before them: * and by lot divided to them their land by a line of distribution.
77:55 And he made the tribes of Israel * to dwell in their tabernacles.
77:56 Yet they tempted, and provoked the most high God: * and they kept not his testimonies.
77:57 And they turned away, and kept not the covenant: * even like their fathers they were turned aside as a crooked bow.
77:58 They provoked him to anger on their hills: * and moved him to jealousy with their graven things.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. The Lord redeemed them from the hand of him that afflicted them.
  14. Psalm 77(59-72)

    Ant. God built.
    Psalm 77(59-72) [6]
77:59 God heard, and despised them, * and he reduced Israel exceedingly as it were to nothing.
77:60 And he put away the tabernacle of Silo, * his tabernacle where he dwelt among men.
77:61 And he delivered their strength into captivity: * and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.
77:62 And he shut up his people under the sword: * and he despised his inheritance.
77:63 Fire consumed their young men: * and their maidens were not lamented.
77:64 Their priests fell by the sword: * and their widows did not mourn.
77:65 And the Lord was awaked as one out of sleep, * and like a mighty man that hath been surfeited with wine.
77:66 And he smote his enemies on the hinder parts: * he put them to an everlasting reproach.
77:67 And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph: * and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
77:68 But he chose the tribe of Juda, * mount Sion which he loved.
77:69 And he built his sanctuary as of unicorns, in the land * which he founded for ever.
77:70 And he chose his servant David, and took him from the flocks of sheep: * he brought him from following the ewes great with young,
77:71 To feed Jacob his servant, * and Israel his inheritance.
77:72 And he fed them in the innocence of his heart: * and conducted them by the skilfulness of his hands.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

    Reading 4
Vincent was born at Huesca in Aragon in Spain. He was early turned to study, and learned sacred letters from Valerius, Bishop of Saragossa. He was accustomed to deliver discourses for this Prelate, who, owing to an impediment in his speech, was not able to preach himself. This coming to the ears of Dacian, Prefect of the province under Diocletian and Maximian, he caused Vincent to be arrested at Saragossa, and brought before him at Valencia in bonds. The saint was scourged, and afterwards tormented on the rack, in presence of numerous spectators, but neither torture, threats, nor fair words could bend his resolution. He was then laid on a grating over hot coals, his flesh mangled with iron hooks, and white-hot plates of metal applied to the wounds. The still breathing remains were taken back to a prison, and laid on broken potsherds, that the agony of his naked body might prevent his sleeping from exhaustion.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. thy Saints, O Lord, have passed a wonderful way, serving thy commandments, that they might be found without hurt in the midst of the mighty waters.
    * Dry land appeared, and, out of the Red Sea, a way without impediment.
℣. He smote the rock, and the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed.
℟. Dry land appeared, and, out of the Red Sea, a way without impediment.
  18. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May Christ to all His people give, for ever in His sight to live.
    ℟. Amen.

    Reading 5
As he lay in his dark cell, a glorious light suddenly filled the prison, to the astonishment of all who saw it. The gaoler informed Dacian, who caused the martyr to be brought out and cared for in a soft bed, hoping that though he had failed to move him by cruelty, he might seduce him by pretended kindness. But the indomitable soul of Vincent, armed with faith and hope in Christ Jesus, remained unconquered even to the end, and triumphing over the fire, the steel, and the cruelty of the tormentors, passed away to receive the victorious crown of martyrdom in heaven, on the 22nd day of January, in the year of our Lord 304. His body was thrown out unburied. A raven perched upon it and kept off with his beak, claws, and wings both the other birds and a wolf, which came to prey on it. Dacian then had it thrown into the sea, but by the will of God it was washed up again, and the Christians took and buried it.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Saints of God shrank not from the stripes of the executioners, but died for Christ's Name's sake
    * That they might be made joint-heirs in the house of the Lord.
℣. They gave their bodies for God's sake to death.
℟. That they might be made joint-heirs in the house of the Lord.
  19. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Spirit's fire Divine in our hearts enkindled shine.
    ℟. Amen.

Anastasius was a Persian monk who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Places at Jerusalem in the reign of the Emperor Heraclius, during which journey he endured bonds and stripes on account of his confession of Christ at Banias, then called Cassarea, in Palestine. Soon after his return, he was arrested by the Persians for the same cause, and, after enduring diverse torments, he and seventy other Christians were beheaded by order of King Chosroes. He testified upon the 22nd day of January in the year of our Lord 628. His reliques were first carried to Jerusalem, to the monastery in which he had made his monastic profession, and afterwards to Rome, where they were laid in the monastery of Saints Vincent and Anastasius.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

    ℟. As gold in the furnace hath the Lord tried His chosen ones, and received them as a burnt-offering, and yet a while, and they shall be regarded;
    * For the grace of God, and His peace, are with His chosen.
℣. They that put their trust in Him shall understand the truth and such as be faithful in love shall abide with Him.
℟. For the grace of God, and His peace, are with His chosen.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. For the grace of God, and His peace, are with His chosen.
  20. Nocturn III

    Nocturn III
Ant. Help us, O God, our Saviour.
    Psalm 78 [7]
78:1 O God, the heathens are come into thy inheritance, they have defiled thy holy temple: * they have made Jerusalem as a place to keep fruit.
78:2 They have given the dead bodies of thy servants to be meat for the fowls of the air: * the flesh of thy saints for the beasts of the earth.
78:3 They have poured out their blood as water, round about Jerusalem, * and there was none to bury them.
78:4 We are become a reproach to our neighbours: * a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.
78:5 How long, O Lord, wilt thou be angry for ever: * shall thy zeal be kindled like a fire?
78:6 Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that have not known thee: * and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.
78:7 Because they have devoured Jacob; * and have laid waste his place.
78:8 Remember not our former iniquities: let thy mercies speedily prevent us, * for we are become exceeding poor.
78:9 Help us, O God, our saviour: and for the glory of thy name, O Lord, deliver us: * and forgive us our sins for thy name’s sake:
78:10 Lest they should say among the Gentiles: Where is their God? * And let him be made known among the nations before our eyes,
78:10 By the revenging the blood of thy servants, which hath been shed: * let the sighing of the prisoners come in before thee.
78:11 According to the greatness of thy arm, * take possession of the children of them that have been put to death.
78:12 And render to our neighbours sevenfold in their bosom: * the reproach wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.
78:13 But we thy people, and the sheep of thy pasture, * will give thanks to thee for ever.
78:13 We will shew forth thy praise, * unto generation and generation.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. Help us, O God, our Saviour, deliver us: and forgive us our sins.
  21. Psalm 80

    Ant. I am the Lord.
    Psalm 80 [8]
80:2 Rejoice to God, our helper: * sing aloud to the God of Jacob.
80:3 Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel: * the pleasant psaltery with the harp.
80:4 Blow up the trumpet on the new moon, * on the noted day of your solemnity.

80:6 He ordained it for a testimony in Joseph, when he came out of the land of Egypt: * he heard a tongue which he knew not.
80:7 He removed his back from the burdens: * his hands had served in baskets.
80:8 Thou calledst upon me in affliction, and I delivered thee: * I heard thee in the secret place of tempest: I proved thee at the waters of contradiction.
80:9 Hear, O my people, and I will testify to thee: * O Israel, if thou wilt hearken to me; there shall be no new god in thee: neither shalt thou adore a strange god.
80:11 For I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt: * open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.
80:12 But my people heard not my voice: * and Israel hearkened not to me.

    Reading 7
From the Holy Gospel according to Luke
    Luke 21:9-19
At that time, Jesus said unto His disciples: When ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. And so on.

Homily by Pope St Gregory the Great.
    35th on the Gospels.
Our Lord and Redeemer willeth us to know what shall be the signs that the end of the world is at hand, to the end that ye may be the less terrified, when that cometh whereof ye have already had warning. Darts strike less which are seen coming: and the plagues of the earth will be to us more bearable, if we are harnessed against them with the shield of foreknowledge. Behold, how He saith When ye shall hear of wars and commotions be not terrified for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. It behoveth us to ponder these words of our Redeemer, wherein He warneth us of suffering, from without, and from within. Wars are the work of a foreign enemy, commotions of the citizens. Therefore, that He may let us know that we shall be troubled from within and from without, He showeth that our wrestling shall be in part against strangers, and in part against our brethren.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Because of the covenant of the Lord, and the laws of their fathers, the Saints of God abode in brotherly love,
    * For one spirit and one faith was ever in them.
℣. Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.
℟. For one spirit and one faith was ever in them.
  26. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. They whose feast-day we are keeping, be our Advocates with God.
    ℟. Amen.

    Reading 8
When these woes come, the end is not by and by. And He saith further Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and great earthquakes shall be in diverse places, and pestilences, and famines, and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. Before the last tribulation cometh, shall come many other tribulations: and, by the many woes which shall come first, shall be foreshadowed the everlasting woe which shall come in the end. And therefore, after wars and commotions, the end is not yet by and by many woes must come first, to give warning of the woe that hath no end.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. O ye My Saints, who, being in the flesh, didst have striving
    * I will render unto you a reward of your labours.
℣. Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom
℟. I will render unto you a reward of your labours.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. I will render unto you a reward of your labours.
  27. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May He that is the Angels' King to that high realm His people bring.
    ℟. Amen.

    Reading 9
But, forasmuch as the signs and troubles whereof the Lord speaketh are so manifold, we must needs shortly consider each for, of necessity, we must suffer some things from heaven, some from the earth, some from the powers of nature, and some from men. For where He saith Nation shall rise against nation He speaketh concerning the troubling of men where great earthquakes shall be in diverse places concerning wrath from above: where: and pestilences concerning the frailty of the body where and famines concerning the barrenness of the earth: where fearful signs from heaven, and tempests concerning commotions of the air. As, then, all things shall have an end, so, before the end, shall all things be troubled and we who have sinned and come short in all things, shall in all things be afflicted, that it may be fulfilled that is written: and the world shall fight with Him against the unwise. Wisd v. 21.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

O glorious King of martyr hosts,
Thou crown that each confessor boasts,
    Who leadest to celestial day
Those who have cast earth's joys away:

Thine ear in mercy, Saviour, lend,
    While unto thee our prayers ascend;
And as we count their triumphs won,
Forgive the sins that we have done.

Martyrs in thee their triumphs gain,
    From thee confessors grace obtain;
O'ercome in us the lust of sin,
That we thy pardoning love may win.

To thee who, dead, again dost live,
    All glory, Lord, thy people give;

Amen.

  2. Hymn

    Hymn
Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
All glory, as is ever meet,
    To God the holy Paraclete.
    Amen.

21:3 O my God, I shall cry by day, and thou wilt not hear: * and by night, and it shall not be reputed as folly in me.
21:4 But thou dwellest in the holy place, * the praise of Israel.
21:5 In thee have our fathers hoped: * they have hoped, and thou hast delivered them.
21:6 They cried to thee, and they were saved: * they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
21:7 But I am a worm, and no man: * the reproach of men, and the outcast of the people.
21:8 All they that saw me have laughed me to scorn: * they have spoken with the lips, and wagged the head.
21:9 He hoped in the Lord, let him deliver him: * let him save him, seeing he delighteth in him.
21:10 For thou art he that hast drawn me out of the womb: * my hope from the breasts of my mother. I was cast upon thee from the womb.

21:15 I am poured out like water; * and all my bones are scattered.
21:15 My heart is become like wax melting * in the midst of my bowels.
21:16 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue hath cleaved to my jaws: * and thou hast brought me down into the dust of death.
21:17 For many dogs have encompassed me: * the council of the malignant hath besieged me.
21:17 They have dug my hands and feet. * They have numbered all my bones.
21:18 And they have looked and stared upon me. * They parted my garments amongst them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.
21:20 But thou, O Lord, remove not thy help to a distance from me; * look towards my defence.
21:21 Deliver, O God, my soul from the sword: * my only one from the hand of the dog.
21:22 Save me from the lion’s mouth; * and my lowness from the horns of the unicorns.
21:23 I will declare thy name to my brethren: * in the midst of the church will I praise thee.

21:25 Neither hath he turned away his face from me: * and when I cried to him he heard me.
21:26 With thee is my praise in a great church: * I will pay my vows in the sight of them that fear him.
21:27 The poor shall eat and shall be filled: and they shall praise the Lord that seek him: * their hearts shall live for ever and ever.
21:28 All the ends of the earth * shall remember, and shall be converted to the Lord:
21:28 And all the kindreds of the Gentiles * shall adore in his sight.
21:29 For the kingdom is the Lord’s; * and he shall have dominion over the nations.
21:30 All the fat ones of the earth have eaten and have adored: * all they that go down to the earth shall fall before him.
21:31 And to him my soul shall live: * and my seed shall serve him.
21:32 There shall be declared to the Lord a generation to come: * and the heavens shall shew forth his justice to a people that shall be born, which the Lord hath made.

O strength and stay upholding all creation,
Who ever dost thyself unmoved abide,
Yet day by day the light in due gradation
From hour to hour through all its changes guide:

Grant to life’s day a calm unclouded ending,
An eve untouched by shadows of decay,
The brightness of a holy death-bed blending
With dawning glories of th’ eternal day.

Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiving,

Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living
Now and to endless ages art adored.

88:49 Who is the man that shall live, and not see death: * that shall deliver his soul from the hand of hell?
88:50 Lord, where are thy ancient mercies, * according to what thou didst swear to David in thy truth?

138:4 And thou hast foreseen all my ways: * for there is no speech on my tongue.
138:5 Behold, O Lord, thou hast known all things, the last and those of old: * thou hast formed me, and hast laid thy hand upon me.
138:6 Thy knowledge is become wonderful to me: * it is high, and I cannot reach to it.
138:7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? * or whither shall I flee from thy face?
138:8 If I ascend into heaven, thou art there: * if I descend into hell, thou art present.

    2 Cor 1:3-4
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort, who comforteth us in all our tribulation.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

    Hymn
Maker of man, who from thy throne
    Dost order all things, God alone;
By whose decree the teeming earth
To reptile and to beast gave birth:

The mighty forms that fill the land,
Instinct with life at thy command,
    Are given subdued to humankind
For service in their rank assigned.

From all thy servants drive away
    Whate’er of thought impure to-day
Hath been with open action blent,
Or mingled with the heart’s intent.

In heaven thine endless joys bestow,
    And grant thy gifts of grace below;
From chains of strife our souls release,
Bind fast the gentle bands of peace.

Grant this, O Father, ever One
    With Christ, thy sole-begotten Son,
Whom, with the Spirit we adore,
One God, both now and evermore.
    Amen.

℣. O Lord, direct my prayer.

76:3 In the day of my trouble I sought God, with my hands lifted up to him in the night, * and I was not deceived.
76:4 My soul refused to be comforted: * I remembered God, and was delighted, and was exercised, and my spirit swooned away.
76:5 My eyes prevented the watches: * I was troubled, and I spoke not.
76:6 I thought upon the days of old: * and I had in my mind the eternal years.
76:7 And I meditated in the night with my own heart: * and I was exercised and I swept my spirit.
76:8 Will God then cast off for ever? * or will he never be more favourable again?
76:9 Or will he cut off his mercy for ever, * from generation to generation?
76:10 Or will God forget to shew mercy? * or will he in his anger shut up his mercies?
76:11 And I said, Now have I begun: * this is the change of the right hand of the most High.
76:12 I remembered the works of the Lord: * for I will be mindful of thy wonders from the beginning.

76:17 The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee: * and they were afraid, and the depths were troubled.
76:18 Great was the noise of the waters: * the clouds sent out a sound.
76:18 For thy arrows pass: * the voice of thy thunder in a wheel.

85:3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I have cried to thee all the day. * Give joy to the soul of thy servant, for to thee, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul.
85:5 For thou, O Lord, art sweet and mild: * and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon thee.
85:6 Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer: * and attend to the voice of my petition.

85:8 There is none among the gods like unto thee, O Lord: * and there is none according to thy works.
85:9 All the nations thou hast made shall come and adore before thee, O Lord: * and they shall glorify thy name.
85:10 For thou art great and dost wonderful things: * thou art God alone.
85:11 Conduct me, O Lord, in thy way, and I will walk in thy truth: * let my heart rejoice that it may fear thy name.
85:12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, * and I will glorify thy name for ever:
85:13 For thy mercy is great towards me: * and thou hast delivered my soul out of the lower hell.
85:14 O God, the wicked are risen up against me, and the assembly of the mighty have sought my soul: * and they have not set thee before their eyes.

    Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son;
Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee,
    Doth live and reign eternally.
