    silently
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: But deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried: he descended into hell; the third day he arose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven; sitteth at the right hand of God the Father almighty: from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Thereafter, with hearable voice, the Versicle is said:
℣. O Lord, + open thou my lips.
℟. And my mouth shall declare thy praise.
    ℣. O God, ✠ come to my assistance;
℟. O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Praise be to thee, O Lord, King of eternal glory.

Ant. Let us celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary: * Let us adore her Son, Christ the Lord.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. Let us celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary: * Let us adore her Son, Christ the Lord.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. Let us adore her Son, Christ the Lord.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. Let us celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary: * Let us adore her Son, Christ the Lord.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. Let us adore her Son, Christ the Lord.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. Let us celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary: * Let us adore her Son, Christ the Lord.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  3. Hymn

    Hymn {from the Proper of Saints}
Thee would we hymn, O spotless one,
Blest Mother of a virgin Son,
And as we chant thy praises meet,
Do thou for us God's grace entreat.

Poor Adam's guilty heirs are we,
    His sin-infected progeny;
But thou, for Christ's sake, we believe,
    From sins' infection hadst reprieve.

Thus, boast of mankind, free from sin
    In thy so glorious origin,
The envious dragon, 'neath thy heel,
On his crushed head Christ's might doth feel.

O flower of the human race,
Who took'st away poor Eve's disgrace,
    Obtain for every wavering one
To serve without reproach thy Son.

When that old serpent would beguile
Our foolish hearts with sinful wile,
Gain us the might to smite him down
And win the blessed victor's crown.

All honour, laud, and glory be,
    O Jesu, Virgin-Born, to thee;
Whom with the Father we adore,
    And Holy Ghost, for evermore.
    Amen.

Lesson from the book of Proverbs
    Prov 8:12-17
12 I wisdom dwell in counsel, and am present in learned thoughts.
13 The fear of the Lord hateth evil: I hate arrogance, and pride, and every wicked way, and a mouth with a double tongue.
14 Counsel and equity is mine, prudence is mine, strength is mine.
15 By me kings reign, and lawgivers decree just things,
16 By me princes rule, and the mighty decree justice.
17 I love them that love me: and they that in the morning early watch for me, shall find me.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Wisdom which reacheth from end to end mightily, and ordereth all things sweetly, hath built herself a house:
    * Behold the tabernacle of God with men.
℣. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
℟. Behold the tabernacle of God with men.
  10. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Son, the Sole-begotten, mercifully bless and keep us.

    Reading 2
    Prov 8:18-25
18 With me are riches and glory, glorious riches and justice.
19 For my fruit is better than gold and the precious stone, and my blossoms than choice silver.
20 I walk in the way of justice, in the midst of the paths of judgment,
21 That I may enrich them that love me, and may fill their treasures.
22 The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his ways, before he made any thing from the beginning.
23 I was set up from eternity, and of old before the earth was made.
24 The depths were not as yet, and I was already conceived. neither had the fountains of waters as yet sprung out:
25 The mountains with their huge bulk had not as yet been established: before the hills I was brought forth:
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. As the rainbow giving light in the clouds, and as the flower of roses in the days of the spring, and as the lilies on the brink of the water,
    * Thus shineth the Virgin immaculate.
℣. I will set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of my covenant with you.
℟. Thus shineth the Virgin immaculate.
  11. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the grace of the Holy Spirit enlighten all our hearts and minds.
    ℟. Amen.

    Prov 8:34-36; 9:1-5
34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, and that watcheth daily at my gates, and waiteth at the posts of my doors.
35 He that shall find me, shall find life, and shall have salvation from the Lord:
36 But he that shall sin against me, shall hurt his own soul. All that hate me love death.
1 Wisdom hath built herself a house, she hath hewn her out seven pillars.
2 She hath slain her victims, mingled her wine, and set forth her table.
3 She hath sent her maids to invite to the tower, and to the walls of the city:
4 Whosoever is a little one, let him come to me. And to the unwise she said:
5 Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine which I have mingled for you.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come, my dove:
    * Shew me thy face, let thy voice sound in my ears.
℣. The voice of the turtle is heard in our land.
℟. Shew me thy face, let thy voice sound in my ears
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

    Reading 4
In the fourth year from the dogmatic definition of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin, at the bank of the river Gave near the town of Lourdes of the diocese of Tarbes in France, the Virgin herself in a bend of the rock above the grotto of Massabiele, often shewed herself to a certain girl, called in the vernacular tongue Bernadette, indeed most poor but noble and pious, to be seen. The Immaculate Virgin appeared with a young and kind appearance, clothed with a white garment and white veil, and girt with a blue girdle; she adorned her bare feet with a golden rose. On the first day of the apparition, which was the eleventh of February in the one thousand eight hundred fifty-eighth year, she taught the girl the sign of the cross to be duly and piously made, and she incited her, by her example, to the recitation of the sacred rosary, turning over with her hand the chaplet, which before was hanging down from her arm: which she supplied also in the other apparitions. And on the second day of the apparition, the girl in the simplicity of her heart, fearing diabolic fraud, flung holy water on the Virgin; but the blessed Virgin, smiling gently, shewed her face more kindly to her. And when she appeared a third time, she invited the girl to the grotto for fifteen days. Thence she often addressed her; then commanded, that it might be declared to the priests, a chapel to be built there, and to be approached there for supplications in a manner of solemnity. Moreover she commanded that from the spring, which thus far was hidden under the sand but now was about to erupt, she might drink the water, and by it cleanse herself. Finally on the feast day of the Annunciation, to the girl earnestly inquiring her name, the Virgin, for whose appearance she was so often deemed worthy, the Virgin, her hands having been moved to her breast and her eyes raised to heaven, answered: I am the Immaculate Conception.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Who is she, that cometh forth as the morning rising,
    * Fair as the moon, bright as the sun?
℣. She is my dove, my perfect one, my undefiled.
℟. Fair as the moon, bright as the sun?
  18. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May Christ to all His people give, for ever in His sight to live.
    ℟. Amen.

    Reading 5
The fame of favours becoming widespread, which the faithful were said to have received in the sacred grotto, in time the assembly of men increased, whom the sanctity of the place called to the grotto. Therefore the bishop of Tarbes moved by the fame of the wonders and the purity of the girl, after a juridical inquiry of the happenings, approved by his decree the signs of the apparition to be supernatural, and permitted the worship of the immaculate Virgin in the same grotto. Soon a chapel is built: from that day the almost innumerable crowds of the faithful, for the purpose of prayer and supplication, from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and the other provinces of Europe and also from the remote regions of America arrived there in every year, and the name of the Immaculate of Lourdes becometh famous of countries everywhere. The water of the spring, having been carried into all parts of the world, restored health to the sick. And the Catholic world mindful of such great favours, built holy shrines there with wonderful work. Innumerable banners, as if monuments of received benefits, sent there by cities and nations, decorate the shrine of the Virgin with wonderful adornment. In this as if her own seat the immaculate Virgin is continually honoured: indeed by day with prayers, religious chant and other solemn ceremonies; and by night with those solemn supplications, by which the almost infinite crowds of pilgrims proceed with candles and lit torches and sing the praises of the blessed Virgin.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. In the last days the mountain a house for the Virgin Mary shall be prepared on the top of mountains, and it shall be exalted above the heavens, and many people shall go and say:
    * Come and let us go up to the mountain.
℣. The dwelling in thee is as it were of all rejoicing.
℟. Come and let us go up to the mountain.
  19. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Spirit's fire Divine in our hearts enkindled shine.
    ℟. Amen.

    Reading 6
It is known by all for certain the pilgrimages of this sort to have stirred up faith, in a world becoming cold, the soul to have increased to profess the Christian law, and to have spread the worship of the immaculate Virgin in a wonderful manner. In which wonderful profession of faith the Christian people have the priests as leaders, who lead their people thence. The holy Bishops themselves also frequently visit the holy place, lead pilgrimages, and take part in more solemn feasts. Nor indeed is it rare to observe these empurpled fathers of the Roman Church approaching humble in the manner of pilgrims. Even these Roman Pontiffs, for their piety towards the Immaculate of Lourdes, enhanced the sacred shrine with most noble gifts. Pius the ninth, with sacred indulgences, distinguished it with the privilege of an archconfraternity and title of a minor Basilica; and willed the image honoured there of the Godbearer, with solemn rite through his apostolic legate in France, to be adorned with a crown. And Leo the thirteenth also conferred innumerable benefits, granted indulgences in the manner of a jubilee in the twenty-fifth year of the Apparition occurring, promoted pilgrimages by his authority and word, and arranged to complete by his name the solemn dedication of the Church under the title of the Rosary. He accumulated the extent of which benefits, when, with the asking of many bishops, he kindly granted a solemn feast to be celebrated under the title of the Apparition of the blessed Virgin Mary immaculate with a proper Office and proper Mass. Finally supreme Pontiff Pius the tenth for his piety towards the Godbearer, and agreeing to the wishes of many holy Bishops, extended the same feast to the universal Church.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Thou hast prevented her, O Lord, with blessings of sweetness, thou hast set on her head
    * A crown of precious stones.
℣. Her glory is great in thy salvation, glory and great beauty shalt thou lay upon her.
℟. A crown of precious stones.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. A crown of precious stones.

From the Holy Gospel according to Luke
    Luke 1:26-28
In that time the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And so on.

Homily by St. Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux.
    2nd on this text.
Rejoice, father Adam, and yet more thou mother Eve, ye that are the source of all, and the ruin of all, and the unhappy cause of their ruin before ye gave them birth. Be comforted both in your daughter, and such a daughter; but chiefly thou, O woman, of whom the first evil came, and who hast cast thy slur upon all women. The time is come for the slur to be taken away, and for the man to have nothing to say against the woman. At the first, when he unwisely began to make excuse, he scrupled not to throw the blame upon her, saying, The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. Wherefore, O Eve, betake thyself to Mary Mother, betake thyself to thy daughter let the daughter answer for the mother let her take away her mother's reproach; let her make up to her father for her mother's fault for if man be fallen by means of woman, it is by means of woman that he is raised up again.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Therefore do thou call upon the Lord, speak to the King for us,
    * And deliver us from death.
℣. All you that thirst, come to the waters, and draw salvation from the Lord.
℟. And deliver us from death.
  26. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. She whose feast-day we are keeping, Mary, blessed Maid of Maidens, be our Advocate with God.
    ℟. Amen.

    Reading 8
What didst thou say, O Adam? The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. These are wrathful words, by the which thou dost rather magnify than diminish thine offence. Nevertheless, Wisdom hath defeated thy malice. God asked thee that He might find in thee an occasion of pardon, but, in that He found it not, He hath sought and found it in the Treasure of His Own mercy. One woman answereth for another; the wise for the foolish; the lowly for the proud; for her that gave thee of the tree of death, another that giveth thee to taste of the tree of life; for her that brought thee the bitter food of sin, another that giveth thee of the sweet fruits of righteousness. Wherefore accuse the woman no more, but speak in thanksgiving, and say, Lord, the woman whom Thou hast given me, she hath given me of the tree of life, and I have eaten; and it is in my mouth sweeter than honey, for thereby hast Thou quickened me. Ps. cxviii. 103, 93. Behold, it was for this that the angel Gabriel was sent to the Virgin, to the most worshipful of women, a woman more wonderful than all women, the restorer of them that went before, and the quickener of them that come after her.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Lord God planted a paradise of pleasure, and brought forth the tree of life in its midst:
    * And a river went out of the place of pleasure.
℣. Thy plants are a paradise, O Virgin Mary.
℟. And a river went out of the place of pleasure.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. And a river went out of the place of pleasure.
  27. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Gospel's glorious word Cleansing to our souls afford.
    ℟. Amen.

    Commemoration of the day
Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
    Matt 8:5-13
At that time, when Jesus had entered into Capharnaum, there came to him a centurion, beseeching him and saying: Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, and is grieviously tormented. And so on.

Homily by St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo.
Book ii on the Agreement of the Evangelists, ch. xx, tom. 4
Let us consider whether Matthew and Luke are at one as touching this centurion's servant. Matthew saith: “There came unto Him a centurion, beseeching Him, and saying: ‘Lord, my servant lieth at home sick, of the palsy.’” This seemeth to differ from what Luke saith, namely: “And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto Him the elders of the Jews, beseeching Him that He would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying: “That he was worthy for whom He should do this; for he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.” Then Jesus went with them; and when He was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying unto Him: “Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that Thou shouldest enter under my roof.” vii. 6, seq.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

    Song 2:13-14
Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come: My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hollow places of the wall, show me thy face, let thy voice sound in my ears.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

    Hymn
O rosy dawn! that dost proclaim
    Salvation's happy day,
To thee, O Virgin, 'mid night's shades,
    Thy people humbly pray.

The torrent, that engulfs all those
    Within this whirlpool drawn,
Rests calm as o'er its softened wave
    The ark of God borne

While earth is parched with scorching
    heat,
    Alone art thou bedewed;
With dew o'erspread the earth around,
    And thou untouched art view'd

The serpent rears his head aloft
    Disgorging poisoned spleen;
But thou his proud, inflated head
Dost crush with pow'r as Queen.

O loving Mother, hear our pray'r,
    As suppliant we cry;
Protect us in our strife with hell
    Who dost its power defy.

O Jesu, born of Virgin bright,
    All glory be to thee,
    With Father and with Paraclete,
    Through all eternity.
    Amen.

1:74 That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, * we may serve him without fear,
1:75 In holiness and justice before him, * all our days.
1:76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:
1:77 To give knowledge of salvation to his people, * unto the remission of their sins:
1:78 Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, * in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:

Final Antiphon of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Hail, O Queen of heaven, enthroned!
    Hail, by Angels Mistress owned!
Root of Jesse, Gate of morn,
Whence the world's true Light was born:

    Glorious Virgin, joy to thee,
Loveliest whom in heaven they see:
Fairest thou, where all are fair,
Plead with Christ our sins to spare.

℣. Allow me to praise thee, holy Virgin.
℟. Give me strength against thine enemies.

    Let us pray.
Grant, O merciful God, to our weak natures thy protection, that we who commemorate the holy Mother of God may, by the help of her intercession, arise from our iniquities. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
℣. May the divine assistance ✠ remain with us always.

Amen.

  2. Hymn

    Hymn {Doxology: Nat}
Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All honour, laud, and glory be,
    O Jesu, Virgin-Born, to thee;
Whom with the Father we adore,
    And Holy Ghost, for evermore.
    Amen.

118:22 Remove from me reproach and contempt: * because I have sought after thy testimonies.
118:23 For princes sat, and spoke against me: * but thy servant was employed in thy justifications.
118:24 For thy testimonies are my meditation: * and thy justifications my counsel.
118:25 (Daleth) My soul hath cleaved to the pavement: * quicken thou me according to thy word.
118:26 I have declared my ways, and thou hast heard me: * teach me thy justifications.
118:27 Make me to understand the way of thy justifications: * and I shall be exercised in thy wondrous works.
118:28 My soul hath slumbered through heaviness: * strengthen thou me in thy words.
118:29 Remove from me the way of iniquity: * and out of thy law have mercy on me.
118:30 I have chosen the way of truth: * thy judgments I have not forgotten.
118:31 I have stuck to thy testimonies, O Lord: * put me not to shame.

118:84 How many are the days of thy servant: * when wilt thou execute judgment on them that persecute me?
118:85 The wicked have told me fables: * but not as thy law.
118:86 All thy statutes are truth: * they have persecuted me unjustly, do thou help me.
118:87 They had almost made an end of me upon earth: * but I have not forsaken thy commandments.
118:88 Quicken thou me according to thy mercy: * and I shall keep the testimonies of thy mouth.
118:89 (Lamed) For ever, O Lord, * thy word standeth firm in heaven.

118:91 By thy ordinance the day goeth on: * for all things serve thee.
118:92 Unless thy law had been my meditation, * I had then perhaps perished in my abjection.
118:93 Thy justifications I will never forget: * for by them thou hast given me life.
118:94 I am thine, save thou me: * for I have sought thy justifications.

118:98 Through thy commandment, thou hast made me wiser than my enemies: * for it is ever with me.
118:99 I have understood more than all my teachers: * because thy testimonies are my meditation.
118:100 I have had understanding above ancients: * because I have sought thy commandments.
118:101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way: * that I may keep thy words.
118:102 I have not declined from thy judgments, * because thou hast set me a law.
118:103 How sweet are thy words to my palate! * more than honey to my mouth.
118:104 By thy commandments I have had understanding: * therefore have I hated every way of iniquity.
118:105 (Nun) Thy word is a lamp to my feet, * and a light to my paths.
118:106 I have sworn and am determined * to keep the judgments of thy justice.
118:107 I have been humbled, O Lord, exceedingly: * quicken thou me according to thy word.
118:108 The free offerings of my mouth make acceptable, O Lord: * and teach me thy judgments.
118:109 My soul is continually in my hands: * and I have not forgotten thy law.
118:110 Sinners have laid a snare for me: * but I have not erred from thy precepts.
118:111 I have purchased thy testimonies for an inheritance for ever: * because they are the joy of my heart.
118:112 I have inclined my heart to do thy justifications for ever, * for the reward.

118:114 Thou art my helper and my protector: * and in thy word I have greatly hoped.
118:115 Depart from me, ye malignant: * and I will search the commandments of my God.
118:116 Uphold me according to thy word, and I shall live: * and let me not be confounded in my expectation.
118:117 Help me, and I shall be saved: * and I will meditate always on thy justifications.
118:118 Thou hast despised all them that fall off from thy judgments; * for their thought is unjust.
118:119 I have accounted all the sinners of the earth prevaricators: * therefore have I loved thy testimonies.
118:120 Pierce thou my flesh with thy fear: * for I am afraid of thy judgments.
118:121 (Ain) I have done judgment and justice: * give me not up to them that slander me.
118:122 Uphold thy servant unto good: * let not the proud calumniate me.
118:123 My eyes have fainted after thy salvation: * and for the word of thy justice.
118:124 Deal with thy servant according to thy mercy: * and teach me thy justifications.
118:125 I am thy servant: * give me understanding that I may know thy testimonies.
118:126 It is time, O Lord, to do: * they have dissipated thy law.
118:127 Therefore have I loved thy commandments * above gold and the topaz.
118:128 Therefore was I directed to all thy commandments: * I have hated all wicked ways.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

O strength and stay upholding all creation,
Who ever dost thyself unmoved abide,

From hour to hour through all its changes guide:

Grant to life’s day a calm unclouded ending,

The brightness of a holy death-bed blending
With dawning glories of th’ eternal day.

All honour, laud, and glory be,

Whom with the Father we adore,
    And Holy Ghost, for evermore.

    Chapter Hymn Verse {from the Proper of Saints}
    Song 2:13-14
Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come: My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hollow places of the wall, show me thy face, let thy voice sound in my ears.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

    Hymn
Lo! Mary is exempt from stain of sin,
    Proclaims the Pontiff high;
And earth applauding celebrates with joy
    Her triumph, far and nigh.

Unto a lowly timid maid she shows
    Her form in beauty fair,
    And the Immaculate Conception truth
    Her sacred lips declare.

O honoured cave, by Mary's smile adorned!
    O hallow'd rock, whence spring
The living waters of a gushing stream,
The gifts of life to bring.

And thither from the farmost bounds of earth
    The pilgrims wend their way,
And suppliant around the Virgin's shrine
    Her powerful help they pray.

The sufferers' cry the Mother fondly hears,
    And grants the longed-for grace;
And health restored, the pilgrim throng returns
    Unto its native place.

O Virgin! have compassion on our needs,
    Refresh us labouring on;
Obtain for us the joys of heavenly life,
    When sorrow all is gone.

All praise and honour to the Father be,
    And to his only Son,
And to the Spirit, Pow'r of both for aye,
    In Godhead ever One.
    Amen.

℣. Holy Virgin, my praise by thee accepted be.
℟. Give me strength against thine enemies.

Amen.
If right after Compline, Matins is said, then Our Father, Hail Mary and Credo, are said twice, once each for end of the Office of the previous day, and for the beginning of the Office of the next.
