Sunday or semidouble observance

Eastertide is the Church’s fifty-day celebration of the Resurrection, a single extended feast that centers on Christ’s victory over death. Day 4 within the Octave of Easter falls in the first week of this season, when each day is treated as part of the great celebration that began on Easter Sunday. The canonical rank “Semidouble” is an older liturgical classification: in plain terms, this day is observed with greater solemnity than an ordinary weekday but is not as solemn as the principal feast days. Because it is within the Easter Octave, the liturgy and prayers keep Easter’s joyful tone throughout the week—readings, antiphons, and hymns echo the Resurrection.

Louis IX's commitment to the Crusade and his subsequent imprisonment underscored the Church's ongoing struggle to reclaim Jerusalem and the importance of royal support for papal missions.
The trials of leaders in faith remind us of the sacrifices made for the pursuit of peace and justice.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

Christ established the Twelve as an apostolic college, with Peter at their head. Peter, the rock of the Church and shepherd of the whole flock, received the keys of the Church; the apostles’ pastoral office continues in the bishops under the primacy of the Pope. As Peter’s successor, the Pope is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of unity among the bishops and the whole company of the faithful, with full, supreme, and universal power over the Church. United with the Pope, bishops serve as visible sources of unity in their own particular Churches, caring for their people with priests and deacons while also sharing concern for all the Churches—especially the poor, those persecuted for the faith, and missionaries. This structure shows the Church’s unity: many local Churches and bishops gathered under one head.

Bishops, with priests as their co-workers, have the first task of preaching the Gospel and are authentic teachers of the apostolic faith with Christ’s authority. Through the Church’s living Magisterium, Christ preserves his people in the faith handed on by the apostles and helps them abide in the truth that liberates. The Church’s shepherds serve this mission in matters of faith and morals, while the faithful adhere to the Church’s teaching with the obedience of faith or, for ordinary teaching, with religious assent. Following the model of the Good Shepherd, bishops are called to lead with compassion and service, sanctifying the Church through prayer, the word, the sacraments, and their example. As we pray and grow in faith together, we can remain closely united to our bishop and the Church, journeying with the flock entrusted to their care toward eternal life.
