Day 5 within the Octave of Easter falls inside the octave, the eight-day prolongation of Easter’s joy that treats each day as if it were Easter Sunday itself. The canonical rank “Semidouble” is a traditional liturgical classification indicating that this day has its own proper prayers and readings while still observing certain general norms of the season; in everyday family terms, it means the day is especially marked liturgically but remains closely connected to the core Easter celebrations. Because this day is part of the octave, the paschal tone and themes — light, renewal, victory over death — remain central in Scripture and prayer.

Martyrdom of Blessed Marcel Callo
1945MartyrdomBlessed Marcel Callo, a French Catholic layman and member of the Young Christian Workers, was martyred in the Mauthausen concentration camp on April 9, 1945. He was arrested by the Nazis for his faith and efforts to support fellow workers.
Marcel Callo's courage in the face of persecution inspires us to stand firm in our faith, even under trial.

Catechism of the Catholic Church
The Resurrection of Jesus is the crowning truth of faith in Christ, fulfilling what God promised to the fathers and standing at the heart of the Paschal mystery with the cross. The New Testament bears witness that it is a real historical event. The empty tomb, while not proof by itself, was an essential sign that led the disciples toward recognizing the Resurrection. Mary Magdalene and the holy women were the first to encounter the Risen One and to bring this message to the apostles; Jesus then appeared to Peter, the Twelve, and many others. Though the disciples were at first saddened, frightened, and slow to believe, their faith in the Resurrection was born, through divine grace, from their direct experience of the risen Jesus. As we reflect together, may we receive this central truth of faith with the witnesses who handed it on.
Bishops, with priests as their co-workers, have the first task of preaching the Gospel and are authentic teachers of the apostolic faith with Christ’s authority. Through the Church’s living Magisterium, Christ preserves his people in the faith handed on by the apostles and helps them abide in the truth that liberates. The Church’s shepherds serve this mission in matters of faith and morals, while the faithful adhere to the Church’s teaching with the obedience of faith or, for ordinary teaching, with religious assent. Following the model of the Good Shepherd, bishops are called to lead with compassion and service, sanctifying the Church through prayer, the word, the sacraments, and their example. As we pray and grow in faith together, we can remain closely united to our bishop and the Church, journeying with the flock entrusted to their care toward eternal life.
In the Catholic Church, the laity, comprising all baptized individuals except those in Holy Orders or religious life, plays a vital role in furthering the mission of Christ. They are called to engage actively in the world, seeking God’s kingdom through their daily lives and responsibilities, thereby shaping society in accordance with Christian values. This vocation includes the responsibility to evangelize, as laypeople contribute significantly to the Church's apostolate, ensuring that the Gospel is heard and embraced by all. Families, particularly parents, are encouraged to embody this mission by fostering a Christian spirit in their homes and guiding their children's faith journey, transforming everyday experiences into acts of worship and service to God.
