Day 2 within the Octave of Pentecost

The Catechism beautifully presents several symbols of the Holy Spirit and their place in the Church’s sacramental life. Water signifies the Spirit’s action in Baptism: through it, birth into divine life is given to us in the Holy Spirit. Anointing with oil signifies the Holy Spirit and is the sacramental sign of Confirmation; it points especially to Jesus, the Christ, uniquely anointed by the Spirit. Fire expresses the transforming energy of the Holy Spirit, who transforms what he touches, and recalls the tongues as of fire at Pentecost. Cloud and light reveal God while veiling the transcendence of his glory, and the Spirit’s cloud overshadowed Mary at Jesus’ conception and the disciples at the Transfiguration. The seal recalls the indelible effect of anointing by the Spirit in Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. The hand and finger point to the Spirit’s gift and action, while the dove recalls the Spirit descending and remaining with Christ at his Baptism and in the purified hearts of the baptized. These images can help families recognize the many ways the Church speaks of the Holy Spirit’s living action.

In these paragraphs, the Catechism shows God’s Word and Spirit working together throughout salvation history, hidden yet active as they prepare for the coming of Christ. Humanity was made in God’s image, but sin and death disfigured that image and deprived us of God’s likeness and glory. God’s promise to Abraham points toward Christ, in whom all nations are blessed and God’s scattered children are gathered into one through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Law was given to lead God’s people toward Christ, while also awakening awareness of sin and desire for the Spirit. Even Israel’s infidelity, exile, and purification are shown as part of God’s faithful plan of promised restoration according to the Spirit, foreshadowing the Cross and the Church.
