In these paragraphs, the Catechism shows God’s Word and Spirit working together throughout salvation history, hidden yet active as they prepare for the coming of Christ. Humanity was made in God’s image, but sin and death disfigured that image and deprived us of God’s likeness and glory. God’s promise to Abraham points toward Christ, in whom all nations are blessed and God’s scattered children are gathered into one through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Law was given to lead God’s people toward Christ, while also awakening awareness of sin and desire for the Spirit. Even Israel’s infidelity, exile, and purification are shown as part of God’s faithful plan of promised restoration according to the Spirit, foreshadowing the Cross and the Church.
In these passages, the Catechism highlights the hopeful expectation of the Messiah and the Holy Spirit’s hidden work in preparing a people for the Lord. The prophets announce that the Lord’s Spirit will renew human hearts, engrave a new law within them, gather and reconcile scattered peoples, and bring God’s peace among men. The humble and meek “poor,” who rely on God’s mysterious plans and await the Messiah’s justice, show the trusting disposition the Spirit prepares. John the Baptist, filled with the Holy Spirit, comes as the forerunner of the Lord, bearing witness to the light and proclaiming Christ, who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. For family prayer and reflection, these passages invite us to join the faithful who wait in hope, relying on God and welcoming the Spirit’s work in our hearts.

Theophanies (manifestations of God) light up the way of the promise, from the patriarchs to Moses and from Joshua to the visions that inaugurated the missions of the great prophets. Christian tradition has always recognized that God's Word allowed himself to be seen and heard in these theophanies, in which the cloud of the Holy Spirit both revealed him and concealed him in its shadow.
