Simple feast

The Vigil of St. James the Apostle falls in the Time after Pentecost, the long liturgical season when the Church remembers the life and mission of the apostles and the growth of the Christian community. A “vigil” is an evening before a feast when families and parishes prepare spiritually for the celebration to come; it often includes prayer, Scripture, and reflection leading into the feast day. The rank “Simple” means this observance is a liturgical celebration of modest priority: it is observed with prayers and readings appropriate to the saint but does not override major feasts or solemnities.

Saint James is the patron saint of Spain and, according to tradition, what are believed to be his remains are held in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.

In the sacrament of Matrimony, spouses are called to embody inviolable fidelity, reflecting God's unwavering love for His people and Christ's devotion to the Church. This commitment requires a profound mutual giving and an unbreakable union, essential not only for the couple but also for the well-being of their children. While the challenges of lifelong fidelity can seem daunting, couples can draw strength from God's definitive love, enabling them to witness this love even amidst difficulties. In cases where marital life becomes unfeasible, the Church upholds the indissolubility of marriage but encourages reconciliation and offers support, ensuring that those facing separation still feel embraced by the Christian community as they strive to live out their faith.

Marriage and married love are ordered by their nature to the procreation and education of children, and in them they find their crowning glory. Parents are the principal and first educators of their children, handing on moral, spiritual, and supernatural life through education; thus marriage and family are at the service of life (CCC 1652-1653). In a world often alien or hostile to faith, believing families are especially important as centers of living, radiant faith. By word and example, parents are the first heralds of faith to their children and should encourage each child’s proper vocation (CCC 1656). Couples without children can still have a deeply meaningful married life, fruitful in charity, hospitality, and sacrifice (CCC 1654). As the “domestic church,” the home is a privileged place for prayer, thanksgiving, holy living, self-denial, active charity, forgiveness, and divine worship (CCC 1656-1657). The Church also calls families to open their homes and hearts to single persons and those without a human family, remembering that the Church is a home and family for everyone (CCC 1658).
