The Evangelical Counsels

Chastity
The evangelical counsel of chastity is the voluntary renunciation of marriage for the sake of Christ and undivided service to His kingdom. It goes beyond the chastity required of every Christian and, when vowed in religious life, offers the whole person to God.
Poverty
The evangelical counsel of poverty is the voluntary surrender or restricted use of personal possessions in order to follow Christ with greater freedom. It goes beyond ordinary justice and detachment by making material goods subject to a stable form of Gospel renunciation.
Obedience
The evangelical counsel of obedience is the voluntary offering of one’s will to God through lawful religious authority and an approved rule. St. Thomas calls it the chief religious vow because it offers not merely possessions or bodily goods, but the direction of one’s own will.

1997 Earthquake and the Basilica of St. Francis
1997Event
In 1997, a devastating earthquake struck Umbria and Marche, leading to the collapse of part of the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. This event was significant as the Basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major pilgrimage destination, reflecting the enduring legacy of St. Francis and the Church's commitment to preserving its sacred sites.
The resilience of faith is often tested in times of calamity, reminding us to seek hope in God amidst destruction.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

Agnosticism can take different forms: it may include a search for God, but it can also express indifference toward the ultimate question of existence or become practical atheism. The first commandment calls us to believe in God, hope in him, and love him above all else. It also calls us to adore God, pray to him, offer him the worship due to him, and fulfill promises and vows made to him. This duty of authentic worship concerns us both personally and socially. Sacred images, rooted in the Incarnation of the Word of God, may be venerated with respect: the honor given to an image passes to the person portrayed. Yet adoration belongs to God alone. As we reflect together, we can ask for hearts that turn from indifference and superstition and grow in authentic worship of God.

The second commandment calls us to respect and honor the holy name of God, which he shares with those who believe in him as a gift of trust and intimacy. This reverence shapes our speech in sacred matters: we are to keep God’s name in silent, loving adoration and use it to bless, praise, and glorify him. As we share the faith in our homes and daily lives, our words about the Lord, the Virgin Mary, and the saints should reflect the respect due to sacred things. Promises made in God’s name carry the weight of his honor, fidelity, truthfulness, and authority, and therefore must be kept in justice. The misuse of God’s name, including blasphemy, is contrary to the respect owed to God; blasphemy is in itself a grave sin. Our confession of faith, preaching, and catechesis should be filled with adoration and respect for the name of Jesus.

"You shall worship the Lord your God" ( Mt 4:10). Adoring God, praying to him, offering him the worship that belongs to him, fulfilling the promises and vows made to him are acts of the virtue of religion which fall under obedience to the first commandment.
