The second commandment calls us to respect and honor the holy name of God, which he shares with those who believe in him as a gift of trust and intimacy. This reverence shapes our speech in sacred matters: we are to keep God’s name in silent, loving adoration and use it to bless, praise, and glorify him. As we share the faith in our homes and daily lives, our words about the Lord, the Virgin Mary, and the saints should reflect the respect due to sacred things. Promises made in God’s name carry the weight of his honor, fidelity, truthfulness, and authority, and therefore must be kept in justice. The misuse of God’s name, including blasphemy, is contrary to the respect owed to God; blasphemy is in itself a grave sin. Our confession of faith, preaching, and catechesis should be filled with adoration and respect for the name of Jesus.

The second commandment emphasizes the sanctity of God's name and the importance of truthfulness in our speech, particularly when taking oaths. An oath is a serious commitment that invokes God's truth; therefore, making a false oath or perjury is a profound disrespect to God, undermining the integrity of human communication. Jesus calls us to a higher standard, urging simplicity and honesty in our words—our affirmations should be trustworthy without needing to call on God as a witness excessively. For Catholic families, this teaches the value of honesty and integrity in everyday life, reminding us to be cautious with our promises and to uphold the dignity of God's name in all our interactions, only invoking it in serious and just circumstances.

Among all the words of Revelation, there is one which is unique: the revealed name of God. God confides his name to those who believe in him; he reveals himself to them in his personal mystery. the gift of a name belongs to the order of trust and intimacy. "The Lord's name is holy." For this reason man must not abuse it. He must keep it in mind in silent, loving adoration. He will not introduce it into his own speech except to bless, praise, and glorify it.
