St. Wenceslaus, Duke and Martyr, is celebrated in the Time after Pentecost, the long season of the Church year when we reflect on the growth and witness of the Christian life after Christ’s sending of the Holy Spirit. In parish and family devotion this day calls us to remember a life of Christian leadership and faithful witness.

The celebration has the rank of Semidouble. In plain language, that means the feast is an important local or national commemoration that receives proper prayers, readings, and some liturgical prominence, but it does not replace the principal Sunday liturgy or the highest universal solemnities. There is no octave or vigil attached here, so the observance is kept on the single appointed day.

O God, Who through the palm of martyrdom transported blessed Wenceslaus from an earthly dominion unto heavenly glory, keep us, by his prayers, from all harm and grant us to rejoice in his fellowship.

Humility is the truthful recognition that every good comes from God and that personal gifts, limits, and duties must be seen as they really are. It avoids both self-exaltation and false self-contempt, placing confidence in God rather than in an invented image of oneself.

Wenceslaus I, Wenceslas I or Václav the Good was the Prince (kníže) of Bohemia from 921 until his death, probably in 935. According to the legend, he was assassinated by his younger brother, Boleslaus the Cruel.

Rejection of false oaths is a duty toward God. As Creator and Lord, God is the norm of all truth. Human speech is either in accord with or in opposition to God who is Truth itself. When it is truthful and legitimate, an oath highlights the relationship of human speech with God's truth. A false oath calls on God to be witness to a lie.
