    Ant. When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart.
    Ant. When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart.
    Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
    Ant. When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart.
    For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
    Ant. Do not harden your heart.
    For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
    Ant. When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart.
    As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
    Ant. Do not harden your heart.
    Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.

  3. Hymn

    Hymn {from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
    Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle
    Sing the last, the dread affray;
    O'er the cross, the victor's trophy,
    Sound the high triumphal lay:
    Tell how Christ, the world's Redeemer,
    As a victim won the day.

    God, his Maker, sorely grieving
    That the first-made Adam fell,
    When he ate the fruit of sorrow,
    Whose reward was death and hell,
    Noted then this wood, the ruin
    Of the ancient wood to quell.

    For the work of our salvation
    Needs would have his order so,
    And the multiform deceiver's
    Art by art would overthrow,
    And from thence would bring the med'cine
    Whence the insult of the foe.

    Wherefore, when the sacred fullness
    Of the appointed time was come,
    This world's Maker left his Father,
    Sent the heav'nly mansion from,
    And proceeded, God Incarnate,
    Of the Virgin's holy womb.

    Weeps the infant in the manger
    That in Bethlehem's stable stands;
    And his limbs the Virgin Mother
    Doth compose in swaddling bands,
    Meetly thus in linen folding
    Of her God the feet and hands.

    To the Trinity be glory
    Everlasting, as is meet;
    Equal to the Father, equal
    To the Son, and Paraclete:
    Trinal Unity, whose praises
    All created things repeat.
    Amen.

    61:3 For he is my God and my saviour: * he is my protector, I shall be moved no more.
    61:4 How long do you rush in upon a man? * you all kill, as if you were thrusting down a leaning wall, and a tottering fence.
    61:5 But they have thought to cast away my price; I ran in thirst: * they blessed with their mouth, but cursed with their heart.
    61:6 But be thou, O my soul, subject to God: * for from him is my patience.
    61:7 For he is my God and my saviour: * he is my helper, I shall not be moved.
    61:8 In God is my salvation and my glory: * he is the God of my help, and my hope is in God.
    61:9 Trust in him, all ye congregation of people: pour out your hearts before him. * God is our helper for ever.
    61:10 But vain are the sons of men, the sons of men are liars in the balances: * that by vanity they may together deceive.
    61:11 Trust not in iniquity, and cover not robberies: * if riches abound, set not your heart upon them.
    61:12 God hath spoken once, these two things have I heard, that power belongeth to God, and mercy to thee, O Lord; * for thou wilt render to every man according to his works.

    65:5 Come and see the works of God; * who is terrible in his counsels over the sons of men.
    65:6 Who turneth the sea into dry land, in the river they shall pass on foot: * there shall we rejoice in him.

    65:8 O bless our God, ye Gentiles: * and make the voice of his praise to be heard.
    65:9 Who hath set my soul to live: * and hath not suffered my feet to be moved:
    65:10 For thou, O God, hast proved us: * thou hast tried us by fire, as silver is tried.
    65:11 Thou hast brought us into a net, thou hast laid afflictions on our back: * thou hast set men over our heads.

    65:15 I will offer up to thee holocausts full of marrow, with burnt offerings of rams: * I will offer to thee bullocks with goats.
    65:16 Come and hear, all ye that fear God, * and I will tell you what great things he hath done for my soul.
    65:17 I cried to him with my mouth: * and I extolled him with my tongue.

    67:5 Sing ye to God, sing a psalm to his name, * make a way for him who ascendeth upon the west: (bow head) the Lord is his name.
    67:5 Rejoice ye before him: * but the wicked shall be troubled at his presence, who is the father of orphans, and the judge of widows.
    67:6 God in his holy place: * God who maketh men of one manner to dwell in a house:
    67:7 Who bringeth out them that were bound in strength; * in like manner them that provoke, that dwell in sepulchres.
    67:8 O God, when thou didst go forth in the sight of thy people, * when thou didst pass through the desert:

    67:10 Thou shalt set aside for thy inheritance a free rain, * O God: and it was weakened, but thou hast made it perfect.

    67:15 When he that is in heaven appointeth kings over her, they shall be whited with snow in Selmon. * The mountain of God is a fat mountain,
    67:16 a curdled mountain, a fat mountain; * Why suspect, ye curdled mountains?
    67:17 A mountain in which God is well pleased to dwell: * for there the Lord shall dwell unto the end.
    67:18 The chariot of God is attended by ten thousands; thousands of them that rejoice: * the Lord is among them in Sinai, in the holy place.

    68:3 I am come into the depth of the sea: * and a tempest hath overwhelmed me.
    68:4 I have laboured with crying; my jaws are become hoarse: * my eyes have failed, whilst I hope in my God.
    68:5 They are multiplied above the hairs of my head, * who hate me without cause.
    68:5 My enemies are grown strong who have wrongfully persecuted me: * then did I pay that which I took not away.

    68:9 I am become a stranger to my brethren, * and an alien to the sons of my mother.
    68:10 For the zeal of thy house hath eaten me up: * and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

    68:12 And I made haircloth my garment: * and I became a byword to them.
    68:13 They that sat in the gate spoke against me: * and they that drank wine made me their song.

    Reading 1
    Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke
    Luke 7:36-50
    In that time, one of the Pharisees desired him to eat with him. And he went into the house of the Pharisee, And so on.

    Homily by Pope St. Gregory the Great.
    33rd on the Gospels
    When I think of the repentance of Mary Magdalene I feel nigher to weep than to say ought. Is there indeed any man, however stony his heart, who is not somewhat moved to follow the example of her repentance by the tears of that poor sinful woman? She weighed what she did, and would not that what she did should be niggardly. She came unbidden among the guests, and obtruded her tears upon the banquet. Ye may hence gather her sorrow, that she was content to weep at a feast.
    ℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

    ℟. Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, and out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
    * For Thou art my hope.
    ℣. O my God, be not far from me O my God, make haste for my help.
    ℟. For Thou art my hope.
  16. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
    Benediction. God's most mighty strength alway be His people's staff and stay.
    ℟. Amen.

    Reading 2
    We believe that this woman, of whom Luke saith that she was a woman in the city, which was a sinner, and whom John nameth Mary, xi. 2, was the same as she of whom it is written in Mark xvi. 9 that the Lord had cast out of her seven devils. And what signify seven devils but all manner of sin? For even as seven days do represent all time, so doth the number seven stand for all. Therefore is it said that Mary had seven devils, because she was full of all sin.
    ℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

    ℟. They be increased that trouble me, and that say There is no help for him in his God.
    * Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God!
    ℣. Lest mine enemy say I have prevailed against him.
    ℟. Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God!
  17. ℣.

    ℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
    Benediction. May He that is the Angels' King to that high realm His people bring.
    ℟. Amen.

    Reading 3
    But see how she realized the depth of her own filthiness, and came to be washed to the Well of Mercy, before all them which were bidden to the feast. The bitterness of her inward shame made her esteem it a light thing to be despised outwardly. At what then do we marvel, my brethren? That she came, or that the Lord welcomed her? Or would it be truer for me to say that He drew her to Him and welcomed her when she came? for His mercy inwardly drew her, and, when she came, His gentleness openly welcomed her.
    ℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

    ℟. How long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?
    * Consider, and hear me, O Lord my God!
    ℣. Those that trouble me will rejoice when I am moved but I have trusted in thy mercy.
    ℟. Consider and hear me, O Lord my God!

    50:14 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, * and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.
    50:15 I will teach the unjust thy ways: * and the wicked shall be converted to thee.
    50:16 Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: * and my tongue shall extol thy justice.
    50:17 O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: * and my mouth shall declare thy praise.
    50:18 For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: * with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.
    50:19 A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: * a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
    50:20 Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; * that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.
    50:21 Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: * then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.

    89:2 Before the mountains were made, or the earth and the world was formed; * from eternity and to eternity thou art God.
    89:3 Turn not man away to be brought low: * and thou hast said: Be converted, O ye sons of men.
    89:4 For a thousand years in thy sight * are as yesterday, which is past.
    89:5 And as a watch in the night, * things that are counted nothing, shall their years be.
    89:6 In the morning man shall grow up like grass; in the morning he shall flourish and pass away: * in the evening he shall fall, grow dry, and wither.
    89:7 For in thy wrath we have fainted away: * and are troubled in thy indignation.
    89:8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thy eyes: * our life in the light of thy countenance.
    89:9 For all our days are spent; * and in thy wrath we have fainted away.
    89:9 Our years shall be considered as a spider: * the days of our years in them are threescore and ten years.
    89:10 But if in the strong they be fourscore years: * and what is more of them is labour and sorrow.
    89:10 For mildness is come upon us: * and we shall be corrected.
    89:11 Who knoweth the power of thy anger, * and for thy fear can number thy wrath?
    89:12 So make thy right hand known: * and men learned in heart, in wisdom.
    89:13 Return, O Lord, how long? * and be entreated in favour of thy servants.
    89:14 We are filled in the morning with thy mercy: * and we have rejoiced, and are delighted all our days.
    89:15 We have rejoiced for the days in which thou hast humbled us: * for the years in which we have seen evils.
    89:16 Look upon thy servants and upon their works: * and direct their children.
    89:17 And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us: and direct thou the works of our hands over us; * yea, the work of our hands do thou direct.

    Psalm 35 [3]
    35:2 The unjust hath said within himself, that he would sin: * there is no fear of God before his eyes.
    35:3 For in his sight he hath done deceitfully, * that his iniquity may be found unto hatred.
    35:4 The words of his mouth are iniquity and guile: * he would not understand that he might do well.
    35:5 He hath devised iniquity on his bed, * he hath set himself on every way that is not good: but evil he hath not hated.
    35:6 O Lord, thy mercy is in heaven, * and thy truth reacheth even to the clouds.
    35:7 Thy justice is as the mountains of God, * thy judgments are a great deep.
    35:7 Men and beasts thou wilt preserve, O Lord: * O how hast thou multiplied thy mercy, O God!
    35:8 But the children of men * shall put their trust under the covert of thy wings.
    35:9 They shall be inebriated with the plenty of thy house; * and thou shalt make them drink of the torrent of thy pleasure.
    35:10 For with thee is the fountain of life; * and in thy light we shall see light.
    35:11 Extend thy mercy to them that know thee, * and thy justice to them that are right in heart.
    35:12 Let not the foot of pride come to me, * and let not the hand of the sinner move me.
    35:13 There the workers of iniquity are fallen, * they are cast out, and could not stand.

    Canticle of Moses [4]
    Exod. 15:1-22
    15:1 Let us sing to the Lord: for he is gloriously magnified, * the horse and the rider he hath thrown into the sea.
    15:2 The Lord is my strength and my praise, * and he is become salvation to me:
    15:3 He is my God and I will glorify him: * the God of my father, and I will exalt him.
    15:4 The Lord is as a man of war, Almighty is his name. * Pharao’s chariots and his army he hath cast into the sea:
    15:5 His chosen captains are drowned in the Red Sea. * The depths have covered them, they are sunk to the bottom like a stone.
    15:6 Thy right hand, O Lord, is magnified in strength: thy right hand, O Lord, hath slain the enemy. * And in the multitude of thy glory thou hast put down thy adversaries:
    15:7 Thou hast sent thy wrath, which hath devoured them like stubble. * And with the blast of thy anger the waters were gathered together:
    15:8 The flowing water stood, * the depths were gathered together in the midst of the sea.
    15:9 The enemy said: I will pursue and overtake, * I will divide the spoils, my soul shall have its fill:
    15:10 I will draw my sword, * my hand shall slay them.
    15:11 Thy wind blew and the sea covered them: * they sunk as lead in the mighty waters.
    15:12 Who is like to thee, among the strong, O Lord? * who is like to thee, glorious in holiness, terrible and praiseworthy, doing wonders?
    15:13 Thou stretchedst forth thy hand, and the earth swallowed them. * In thy mercy thou hast been a leader to the people which thou hast redeemed:
    15:14 And in thy strength thou hast carried them * to thy holy habitation.
    15:15 Nations rose up, and were angry: * sorrows took hold on the inhabitants of Philisthiim.
    15:16 Then were the princes of Edom troubled, trembling seized on the stout men of Moab: * all the inhabitants of Chanaan became stiff.
    15:17 Let fear and dread fall upon them, * in the greatness of thy arm:
    15:18 Let them become unmoveable as a stone, until thy people, O Lord, pass by: * until this thy people pass by, which thou hast possessed.
    15:19 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thy inheritance, * in thy most firm habitation which thou hast made, O Lord;
    15:20 Thy sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established. * The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.
    15:21 For Pharao went in on horseback with his chariots and horsemen into the sea: * and the Lord brought back upon them the waters of the sea:
    15:22 But the children of Israel walked on dry ground * in the midst thereof.

    146:2 The Lord buildeth up Jerusalem: * he will gather together the dispersed of Israel
    146:3 Who healeth the broken of heart, * and bindeth up their bruises.
    146:4 Who telleth the number of the stars: * and calleth them all by their names.
    146:5 Great is our Lord, and great is his power: * and of his wisdom there is no number.
    146:6 The Lord lifteth up the meek, * and bringeth the wicked down even to the ground.
    146:7 Sing ye to the Lord with praise: * sing to our God upon the harp.
    146:8 Who covereth the heaven with clouds, * and prepareth rain for the earth.
    146:8 Who maketh grass to grow on the mountains, * and herbs for the service of men.
    146:9 Who giveth to beasts their food: * and to the young ravens that call upon him.
    146:10 He shall not delight in the strength of the horse: * nor take pleasure in the legs of a man.

  7. Chapter Hymn Verse

    Chapter Hymn Verse {from the Psalter for the day of the week}
    Jer 11:19
    Come, let us put wood on his bread, and cut him off from the land of the living, and let his name be remembered no more.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

    Hymn
    Thirty years among us dwelling,
    His appointed time fulfilled,
    Born for this, he meets his passion,
    For that this he freely willed:
    On the cross the Lamb is lifted,
    Where his life-blood shall be spilled.

    He endured the nails, the spitting,
    Vinegar, and spear, and reed;
    From that holy body broken
    Blood and water forth proceed:
    Earth, and stars, and sky, and ocean,
    By that flood from stain are free.

    Faithful cross! above all other,
    One and only noble tree!
    None in foliage, none in blossom,
    None in fruit thy peers may be;
    Sweetest wood and sweetest iron!
    Sweetest weight is hung on thee.

    Bend thy boughs, O tree of glory!
    Thy relaxing sinews bend;
    For awhile the ancient rigour,
    That thy birth bestowed, suspend;
    And the King of heavenly beauty
    On thy bosom gently tend!

    Thou alone wast counted worthy
    This world's ransom to uphold;
    For a shipwrecked race preparing
    Harbour, like the ark of old;
    With the sacred blood anointed
    From the smitten Lamb that rolled.

    To the Trinity be glory
    Everlasting, as is meet;
    Equal to the Father, equal
    To the Son, and Paraclete:
    Trinal Unity, whose praises
    All created things repeat.
    Amen.

    ℣. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God.
    ℟. And defend me from them that rise up against me.

    1:68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; * because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people:
    1:69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, * in the house of David his servant:
    1:70 As he spoke by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * who are from the beginning:
    1:71 Salvation from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us:
    1:72 To perform mercy to our fathers, * and to remember his holy testament,
    1:73 The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, * that he would grant to us,
    1:74 That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, * we may serve him without fear,
    1:75 In holiness and justice before him, * all our days.
    1:76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:
    1:77 To give knowledge of salvation to his people, * unto the remission of their sins:
    1:78 Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, * in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:
    1:79 To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: * to direct our feet into the way of peace.

  2. Hymn

    Hymn
    Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
    Lowly of heart, our God we pray
    That he from harm may keep us free
    In all the deeds this day shall see.

    May fear of him our tongues restrain,
    Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
    His favouring care our guardian be,
    Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

    May every heart be pure from sin
    And folly find no place therein:
    Scant need of food, excess denied,
    Wear down in us the body's pride.

    That when the light of day is gone,
    And night in course shall follow on.
    We, free from cares the world affords,
    May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

    All laud to God the Father be,
    All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
    All glory, as is ever meet,
    To God the holy Paraclete.
    Amen.

    On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor and Doctor of the Church, John of Damascus, famous for holiness and teaching. He strove manfully for the honouring of the holy images, both by word and writing, against the Emperor Leo the Isaurian wherefore the Emperor commanded that his right hand should be smitten off; whereupon he commended himself to the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which he had defended, and forthwith he received back his hand whole and sound. 3. Psalms

    Psalms {from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
    Ant. O Lord, thou hast judged * the cause of my soul, thou the Redeemer of my life.
    Psalm 72(1-9) [1]
    72:1 How good is God to Israel, * to them that are of a right heart!
    72:2 But my feet were almost moved; * my steps had wellnigh slipped.
    72:3 Because I had a zeal on occasion of the wicked, * seeing the prosperity of sinners.
    72:4 For there is no regard to their death, * nor is there strength in their stripes.
    72:5 They are not in the labour of men: * neither shall they be scourged like other men.
    72:6 Therefore pride hath held them fast: * they are covered with their iniquity and their wickedness.
    72:7 Their iniquity hath come forth, as it were from fatness: * they have passed into the affection of the heart.
    72:8 They have thought and spoken wickedness: * they have spoken iniquity on high.
    72:9 They have set their mouth against heaven: * and their tongue hath passed through the earth.
    ℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
    ℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
  4. Psalm 72(10-17)

    Psalm 72(10-17) [2]
    72:10 Therefore will my people return here * and full days shall be found in them.
    72:11 And they said: How doth God know? * and is there knowledge in the most High?
    72:12 Behold these are sinners; and yet abounding in the world * they have obtained riches.
    72:13 And I said: Then have I in vain justified my heart, * and washed my hands among the innocent.
    72:14 And I have been scourged all the day; * and my chastisement hath been in the mornings.
    72:15 If I said: I will speak thus; * behold I should condemn the generation of thy children.
    72:16 I studied that I might know this thing, * it is a labour in my sight:
    72:17 Until I go into the sanctuary of God, * and understand concerning their last ends.
    ℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
    ℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
  5. Psalm 72(18-28)

    Psalm 72(18-28) [3]
    72:18 But indeed for deceits thou hast put it to them: * when they were lifted up, thou hast cast them down.
    72:19 How are they brought to desolation? they have suddenly ceased to be: * they have perished by reason of their iniquity.
    72:20 As the dream of them that awake, O Lord; * so in thy city thou shalt bring their image to nothing.
    72:21 For my heart hath been inflamed, and my reins have been changed: * and I am brought to nothing, and I knew not.
    72:23 I am become as a beast before thee: * and I am always with thee.
    72:24 Thou hast held me by my right hand; and by thy will thou hast conducted me, * and with thy glory thou hast received me.
    72:25 For what have I in heaven? * and besides thee what do I desire upon earth?
    72:26 For thee my flesh and my heart hath fainted away: * thou art the God of my heart, and the God that is my portion for ever.
    72:27 For behold they that go far from thee shall perish: * thou hast destroyed all them that are disloyal to thee.
    72:28 But it is good for me to adhere to my God, * to put my hope in the Lord God:
    72:28 That I may declare all thy praises, * in the gates of the daughter of Sion.
    ℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
    ℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

    Jer 11:20
    But thou, O Lord of Sabaoth, who judgest justly, and triest the reins and hearts, let me see thy revenge on them: for to thee I have revealed my cause, O Lord my God.
    ℟. Thanks be to God.

    Hymn
    Abroad the regal banners fly,
    Now shines the cross’s mystery;
    Upon it Life did death endure,
    And yet by death did life procure.

    Who, wounded with a direful spear,
    Did, purposely to wash us clear
    From stain of sin, pour out a flood
    Of precious water mixed with blood.

    That which the prophet-king of old
    Hath in mysterious verse foretold,
    Is now accomplished, whilst we see
    God ruling nations from a tree.

    O lovely and refulgent tree,
    Adorned with purpled majesty;
    Culled from a worthy stock, to bear
    Those limbs which sanctifièd were.

    Blest tree, whose happy branches bore
    The wealth that did the world restore;
    The beam that did that body weigh
    Which raised up hell’s expected prey.

    The following verse is said on bended knee.

    O Cross, our one reliance, hail!
    This holy Passiontide avail
    To give fresh merit to the saint,
    And pardon to the penitent.

    Blest Trinity, salvation’s spring,
    May every soul thy praises sing;
    To those thou grantest conquest by
    The holy cross, rewards apply.
    Amen.

    ℟. Rescue me from the unjust man.

    O Father, that we ask be done,
    Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son;
    Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee,
    Doth live and reign eternally.
    Amen.
